Dr Joseph Shea, Glacier Hydrologist at ICIMOD, was recently awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Early Career Scientists at the 7th International Conference on Global Energy and Water Exchange (GEWEX). The conference, which took place at the World Forum in The Hague, Netherlands, was attended by over 600 scientists from the fields of atmospheric, climate, and hydrological sciences. Dr Shea and Dr Walter Immerzeel, Visiting Scientist at ICIMOD and Associate Professor in the Physical Geography Department at Utrecht University, have been conducting research on large-scale glaciological and hydrological sensitivities of basins in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. Their poster presentation, which was titled ‘Water: Trending Now’, succinctly captured the broad theme of the GEWEX conference, and was recognized for raising awareness about the impending effects of climate change. Their research is focused on identifying river basins where climate change will have significant impacts on glacier hydrology. Their work is currently being prepared for submission to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
