ICIMOD at the Fourteenth Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-14) in Nairobi, Kenya

ICIMOD is committed to biodiversity conservation and management at the regional scale; its work is guided in principle and action by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), a global agreement on strategies for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The Fourteenth Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-14) is of particular interest. ICIMOD is participating in the meeting and organising a side event in partnership with its regional member countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan – to bring to international notice the collective efforts of the Centre and the regional member countries on biodiversity conservation and management.

The theme of the side event is ‘Status of CBD Implementation and Development of ABS Regional Framework in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region’; it will be held on 17th May 2010 at the United Nations Office in Nairobi. The event is being organised to raise awareness within the regional and international community about the implementation status of CBD in the HKH region, specifically keeping in view the Programme of Work on Mountain Biodiversity (PoW-MB); to raise understanding of how the HKH regional member countries are confronting the challenges in meeting the goals; to share and discuss the draft regional framework on access and benefit sharing (ABS) prepared for the HKH region; and to solicit suggestions for regional cooperation for further developing and implementing an ABS framework in the region. Panel presentations will be made by the CBD focal points from the HKH countries.

ICIMOD will also display seven posters in the parallel poster session organised by the CBD Secretariat on the themes of Access and Benefit Sharing, CBD Implementation in HKH countries, Conservation Connectivity, Gender and Biodiversity, Kailash Sacred Landscape Conservation Initiative, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, and Trans-Himalayan Transects.
