Remote Sensing-based Snow and Glacier Monitoring
This component is intended for building regional capacity for snow and ice monitoring using state-of-the-art remote sensing tools and techniques. It facilitates a common regional approach and methodology for mapping snow and glaciers, contributing to the development of a regional database on cryosphere by bringing together a network of institutions in the region. Its activities include:
- Mapping and monitoring glaciers and glacial lakes using Landsat and other high-resolution satellite images
- Snow cover monitoring using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), a ground receiving station that porvides near real-time snow cover information.
- Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and high resolution stereopair satellite images to monitor glacier mass changes
- Detailed investigations of glaciers in representative basins/sub-basins
