Dr M.S.R. Murthy is working as a Senior Consultant of Geospatial Solutions, one of thematic areas of ICIMOD, Nepal. He worked as Theme Leader of Geospatial Solutions of ICIMOD for 4 years and as Scientist, Head Forestry and Ecology Division, National Remote Sensing Center (Indian Space Research Organization), Hyderabad, India for 20 years. He holds a Ph.D. in Botany from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India.
 
He has over 25 years of experience in Remote Sensing Science and Geospatial Applications in natural resources management and informed decision making with focus on regional and micro level planning, community development, food security, fuel wood energy balance, national forest monitoring and inventory systems, ecosystem management, water resources management, environmental impact assessment, disaster risk reduction; climate change mitigation and adaptation.
 He has been responsible in developing Indian Forest Fire Response and Assessment System, the Indian Rapid Land Use Land Cover Information System, the Forest Inventory Data Analysis System, and the Indian Bio Resources Information Network. His contributions on developing innovative tools around the concept Space to Village through ICIMOD-USAID/NASA –SERVIR Himalaya initiative stand as fundamentals for improving Himalayan Mountain livelihoods. He is also responsible in developing policy framework, integration, capacity building and institutionalization of geospatial applications across different states of India and different countries of Hindu Kush Himalayan region. 

He has been associated with several regional and international bodies like IPCC, UNEP/GEO-6 Assessment, SAARC Forestry, FAO-UNREDD, NASA LULC Science team and ISPRS in evolving regional and global standards of geospatial applications, regional and global cooperation and  assessments. Dr. Murthy was awarded the Astronautical Society of India ‘National Space Gold Medal’, the Indian Science Congress Association National Young Scientist Award, and ESRI International Group Achievement Award. He has published around 100 peer reviewed research articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals, chaired several international conferences/seminars, and has guided 5 Ph.D. and 10 M. Tech students.
