Pitamber P. Dhyani

Dr Pitamber P. Dhyani is the Director of G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development (GBPNIHESD), India. With his scientific expertise across eco-physiology, restoration ecology and conservation biology, Dhyani has 236 scientific publications, including 163 research papers/articles and 16 books, to his credit. He is the member of a number of high-powered committees of Government of India (i.e., Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change- MoEF&CC) including Advisory Committee for Ecosystem Research Programme, Expert Committee for Declaration of Eco-Sensitive Zones, Steering Committee for National Mission on Himalayan Studies, and also of ICIMOD's International Steering Committee for the Himalayan University Consortium. Based on Dhyani’s outstanding contributions, he, in 2009, was named as one of the ‘Leading Scientists of the World’ and ‘Top 100 Scientists of the World’ by the International Biographical Centre, United Kingdom. In 2012, Dhyani was conferred with the ‘Gold Medal for India’ and ‘Award of Excellence’ by the American Biographical Institute, USA. Through his leadership, he succeeded in obtaining approval of MoEF&CC for elevation of ‘G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development’ as a National Institute in 2016, and got it upgraded/renamed as ‘G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development’.
