Training on Earth Observation and Geospatial Technologies for Water Resources Management in Afghanistan

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), in partnership with the Faculty of Geosciences, Kabul University, will conduct a ten-day training on earth observation and geospatial technologies for water resource management at the university campus in Kabul, Afghanistan

The training is being organized as part of a series of capacity building initiatives for professionals in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR-Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) initiative, a joint development initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  SERVIR works in partnership with leading regional organizations worldwide to help developing countries use information provided by earth observation data and geospatial technologies for managing water, weather and climate risks, agriculture and food security, and land use. 

This training will focus on the use of earth observation data and geospatial technologies for water resource management in Afghanistan. Training materials and hands-on exercises have been specifically tailored for Afghanistan. The training will cover basic concepts of water resource management, theoretical and practical understanding of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS). It will offer hands-on experiences to the participants in analyzing earth observation data for water resource management. Topics covered include advanced geospatial analysis including watershed and drainage delineations, and the generation of meteorological data and hydrological modeling. There will be a demonstration on the Kabul Hydrological Model, which will showcase how information derived from earth observation and geospatial technologies can be used for managing water resources. The workshop will engage professionals from the Ministry of Energy and Water, Kabul University, and other institutions in Afghanistan.

Objective

This training aims to train professionals based in Afghanistan on the use of Earth observation data and geospatial technology for managing water resources in Afghanistan.
