“Now with a reliable source of water, we will be able to run our aquaculture farm successfully.” - Kumari Chaudhary

Kumari and her husband Kapil Dev Chaudhary have been commercial aquaculture farmers for the past four years. They were inspired to install an SPIP after they saw the success their neighbour, Birendra Chaudhary, had with one. The pump and the land are officially registered under Kumari’s name so the husband and wife qualified for the 10% additional subsidy offered to women farm owners. This provision is aimed at empowering women in agriculture. The family have indeed seen great success after the installation of the pump.

Before the installation of the solar powered system, their only source of water was a canal. Water from the canal was insufficient for any type of aquaculture and unreliable for traditional agriculture. The family owns a 7.5 HP diesel pump; operating the pump was expensive and time consuming. Now, with solar irrigation, they have adequate and reliable access to water. Their fish farm has taken off and is providing sustainable income to the family. They had been cultivating cereal crops and vegetables for their own consumption. Their production has increased and the surplus is sent to the market. The new system is easy to use, so both husband and wife can operate it.

The family plans to expand the farm and buy at least another 0.5 hectares of land on which they can build more ponds for aquaculture. They are also  interested in using modern technology in the future. They are  hoping that their children, who are now young, will pursue agriculture and eventually take over the farm.

Kumari and Kapil were inspired to invest in solar irrigation after they saw their  neighbour benefit greatly from it. Now many people come to them to inquire about the solar powered system, just as they used to visit their neighbour to do the same. They  share advice and first-hand knowledge about the advantages of owning the system with whoever visits the farm. Their story has also  inspired others to invest in SPIPs and take up aquaculture. They enjoy helping others in the community by sharing their struggles and the secret to the success: solar irrigation.

Solar irrigation has changed the game for the Chaudhary family. They are now successful aquaculture farmers. As their income and production has increased, they are reinvesting in their farm. Their livelihood has improved significantly and they have big aspirations for the future thanks to solar powered irrigation.
