8 December 2011: Youth Forum – Empowering youth in Earth observation information for climate action in the Himalayas, Islamabad, Pakistan

A Youth Forum on ‘Empowering Youth in Earth Observation Information for Climate Action in the Himalayas’ was held at the Institute of Space Technology (IST), Islamabad, from 7 to 10 December. The event was jointly organised by ICIMOD, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), and Lead Pakistan under the framework of SERVIR Himalaya. On behalf of SUPARCO and IST, Dr. Abdul Aziz Mazhar, Dean of IST, said that IST is collaborating with international centres like ICIMOD in conducting research and training activities in Pakistan. He added that Earth observation is proving to be a vital tool for improving understanding of the climate change phenomenon by providing information on the changes in terms of different indicator attributes.

The aim of the Youth Forum was to inform young people and increase their awareness of climate change in the Himalayan region, and highlight the importance of Earth observation. Participants were exposed to interactive modern geospatial information tools in order to help them to understand and take better informed decisions for climate action in the region.

Lead-Pakistan is concerned with increasing human resource capital by developing leadership skills through capacity building and training programmes in sustainable development. In the Youth Forum, young people were encouraged to broaden their thinking, improve their understanding of national and global concerns, and be prepared to face challenges such as environmental degradation and climate vulnerability.
