EH-BCCA
Welcome to the Eastern Himalayas Biodiversity and Climate Change Adaptation (EHBCCA) website – an interactive platform for knowledge sharing and information exchange among ICIMOD, associated project partners, and wider audiences across the world.
About
The website provides information on the MacArthur Foundation funded project ‘Biodiversity and Climate Change Adaptation in the Eastern Himalayas’.
It also serves as a repository of information and knowledge products on biodiversity and climate change adaptation from all the earlier MacArthur supported projects in the Eastern Himalayas that were implemented by ICIMOD and its partners in the regional member countries.
The website gives detailed information about the project, highlighting its goals, objectives, methodologies adopted for research, and the activities implemented by the partners, as well as the intended outputs. The content has been extracted from partners’ reports, published documents, research papers, Letters of Agreement, and other web-based resources.
The project interventions will focus on two wetlands that are linked with agriculture, tourism and species conservation.
Phobjikha is a U-shaped glacial valley situated at the mean altitude of 3,000 m in Wangdue Phoorang district in Bhutan.
Koshi Tappu lies between the coordinates of 26° 56' -26° 40' and 85° 56'-87° 04' in the floodplains of the Koshi river.
Exercise
In 2010, ICIMOD conducted an extensive participatory exercise to assess the vulnerability and adaptive capacities of communities to change. The assessment, based on a Participatory Rural Appraisal approach, was conducted in 90 villages across 15 districts in Bhutan, India and Nepal.
Projects
The project particularly focused into promoting a transboundary landscape approach as a means to climate change adaptation and for increasing socioeconomic and environmental resilience.
The assessment clarified correlations among climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and ecosystem services for human wellbeing
Promote transboundary biodiversity management, adopting the Convention on Biological Diversity ecosystem approach
To promote the landscape approach to biodiversity conservation
To strengthen the Kangchenjunga Landscape as an integrated conservation-linked livelihood development model
Holistic and intersectoral approach.
The countries sharing the HKH region have realised that climate change is a shared problem and that adaptation is a regional agenda that demands a holistic and intersectoral approach.
