Our focus
The HKH region is undergoing major transformations and facing persistent problems: increasingly diversified rural livelihoods, persistent rural poverty, and accelerating climate change-led environmental degradation. We work with mountain communities to adapt and transform in the face of these changes.
Although mountain livelihoods in the HKH are undergoing changes, these are incremental and not sufficient to enhance the resilience of mountain communities. We need to bring about transformative change – a change that will uplift and fortify HKH communities and build on their unique strengths.
We take a holistic approach to mountain development, keeping people at the core of all that we do. We seek to help mountain communities recognize and build resilience to threats to their way of life and effect transformative change in the region.
Initiatives
Our initiatives focus on mountain-specific issues and pilot innovative technologies and approaches to adaptation and resilience building, all the while integrating traditional knowledge and practices.

Events around the HKH
Flyer
Based on the FAO’s approach of climate-smart agriculture, ICIMOD has developed the Climate Smart Village approach, which is customized for mountain areas. The approach equips communities with tools to improve their resilience to climate change and other changes and fosters sustainable development, particularly of agriculture.
