SANDEE

Winter School

Winter School in Research Methods is a one to two weeks course offered every year in the month of January. This course is designed for SANDEE researchers/associates who are working on a project with SANDEE. The objective of the Winter School is to strengthen various aspects of research methods including research design, econometrics, analytical methods, and writing skills.

SANDEE is organizing a one – week Winter School in Research Methods from February 29 – March 4, 2016 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The objective of this workshop is to help researchers strengthen their analyses, writing and communication skills. The workshop is designed mostly for SANDEE researchers/associates who are doing a project with SANDEE. The workshop will be divided into various segments such as:
a) survey design and sampling;
b) data management;
c) topics in research analyses, including econometrics;
d) literature review and manuscript development and writing.
Objectives
The Winter School seeks to provide researchers with the skills necessary to understand and analyze data, interpret results, and learn how to write manuscript and communicate the results to the targeted audience effectively.
Who will attend the course?
This Winter School is meant for SANDEE researchers who are working on SANDEE funded research. The ideal participants are SANDEE researchers who need additional skills to analyze the data, develop a manuscript and communicate effectively to the specialized as well as general audience.
What can you expect to do during the course?
The course will cover fundamentals of data management, exploration and analyses, including most frequently used econometric analysis. As this is a residential course, participants will get enough time to interact with faculty and will also learn from the peers while working on their data sets. Participants are asked to bring their own computer and cleaned data set if they have collected data. Participants are expected to conduct statistical analysis using STATA and present results at the end of the workshop. Those who are in early stages of their research will work in teams using data collected by other researchers.

SANDEE organized a two-week training course in ‘Research Methods for Environmental Economics,’ from 4th – 13th March 2014. The course was meant for current SANDEE researchers who need to learn different aspects of empirical research in environmental economics in order to complete their research projects.
Objectives
The workshop seeks to provide researchers with the basic skills necessary to
  • conceptualize, develop and administer household surveys
  • learn how to do literature review
  • manage, understand and analyze survey data
  • develop a manuscript for publication

The aim was to teach a mix of theory and empirics and provide hands-on training in econometric software such as STATA and EXCEL. The course also hopes to enable those researchers who have their own data to make progress in data analyses and developing manuscript.

The course had the following modules:
Module 1: How to design a sample, develop a survey instrument, train enumerators and collect survey data (2 days, including half day mock training exercises and half day peer review of researcher questionnaires)
Module 2: Data Management and Basics of Analysis (4 days, including 1 day training on STATA)
Module 3: Literature review, presentation skills and manuscript development (2 days, including one day for re-writing/editing the literature review or manuscript)

SANDEE organized a two week Winter School in Research Methods from 14th – 24th January in Kavre, Dhulikhel, Nepal. The objective of this workshop was to strengthen various aspects of research design, implementation, analyses and presentation. The workshop was designed mostly for SANDEE researchers/associates who are doing project with SANDEE.
The workshop was divided into various segments such as
a) survey design and sampling;
b) data management;
c) topics in research analyses, including econometrics;
d) literature review and manuscript development and writing.
Winter School 2013 Agenda, Winter School 2013 Description

SANDEE organized a two-week training course in ‘Econometrics for Environmental Economics: Theory and Applications,’during 8th -18th January, 2012. The course was meant for current SANDEE researchers who need to learn applied econometrics in order to complete their research projects.
Objectives
The workshop seeks to provide researchers with the basic skills necessary to analyze data. The aim is to teach a mix of theory and empirics and provide hands-on training in econometric software such as STATA. The course also hopes to enable those researchers who have their own data to make progress in data analyses and estimation of research results.
What can you expect to do during the course?
The course will cover basic data management, exploration and analyses, including most frequently used regression models (ranging from simple to multiple regressions). As this is a residential course, participants will get enough time to interact with faculty and will also learn from other participants while working on their data sets. Participants are expected to read material prior to the course and participate in detailed assignments and discussions during the course. Some prior experience with statistical analyses is expected.Participants are asked to bring their own computer and cleaned data set if they have collected data.Participants will be expected to analyze their data and present their results at the end of the workshop. Data collected by participants will be used in practical classes whenever possible. Those who are in early stages of their research will work in teams using data collected by other researchers. SANDEE will provide STATA software for training purposes.
Agenda, Course Description, Participant List

South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) jointly with OKD Institute of Social Change and Development, Guwahati organized a six-day training course on Introduction to Quantitative Environmental Economics (IQEE) from January 24th – 27th, 2011 in Guwahati, India. This course is a practical course and is designed for teachers and researchers who want to understand and apply economic tools to valuing environmental goods and services. The course provided a general introduction to environmental economics and to inform students about specific methods and strategies for undertaking valuation exercises. Participants from North-Eastern States of India benefited from this course.
