The Regional Database System (RDS) ensures the integrated management of centre-wide data and information incorporating geospatial, socioeconomic, and multi-thematic data at different levels.

Our focus
RDS builds partnerships with a range of institutions and with other Regional Programmes and Initiatives for the development and operationalization of information systems.
Common approaches and methodologies will be promoted for the generation, management, and dissemination of data on different thematic areas. Institution-wide policies and operational guidelines will be developed for the facilitation and promotion of data sharing in consultation with national institutions and stakeholders. This Initiative will collaborate with national, regional, and global partners for product development and dissemination using emerging technologies.

The Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform is increasingly finding acceptance across academic, business, non-profit, and government users for scientific analysis and visualization of geospatial datasets in the region. Accordingly, ICIMOD supported the National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM), Royal Government of Bhutan, in organizing Bhutan’s first GEE training in June 2019.

Events around the HKH
We have a deep history of work across a broad range of issues enabling sustainable development in the complex environment of the HKH. We have been protecting the pulse for over three decades.
There are an estimated 54,000 glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayas. These glaciers cover 60,000 square kilometers and serve as a major source of the water in the region’s rivers, including as much as 40 percent in the Indus River system.
The stakes are high. Changes in temperature and precipitation can affect many aspects of mountain environments, which in turn affect life downstream, from irrigation to food to hydropower to industry.
ICIMOD has established a Regional Database System (RDS) that acts as a central data repository for different thematic areas in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region and provides easy access to these data through this RDS portal.
