Media Workshop

Environmental news reporting on climate change has become one of the most effective means to educate people on what is happening in different ecosystems, how the situation is changing, what the changes mean to people living there and to the global community, and how people are coping with such changes. Climate change and other drivers of change in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) have already begun to impact ecosystems and communities and often manifest in communities through an increasing vulnerability and exposure to natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and landslides. There is a need to strengthen approaches for building resilience in the mountains, as resilience is required for achieving many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and neglecting mountain resilience will inevitably lead to sustainability challenges in the plains.

From 3–6 December, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)—together with the Government of Nepal and the European Union—is hosting a conference on resilience in the HKH at the ICIMOD Headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. Over 200 global experts from the HKH and beyond, including a range of government decision makers, development practitioners, private business leaders, researchers, financial partners, young scholars, politicians, media persons, and community representatives will be participating during the conference.

Additionally, a media workshop has been scheduled for media participants which includes a 1 December 2017 workshop day at the Hotel Himalaya and a full day field visit on 2 December 2017.

Objective

The objectives of the workshop are:

• To foster a better understanding among news media and environmental journalists about climate change, and raise awareness on various aspects of resilience from a mountain perspective.
• To provide updated scientific information on environmental issues, particularly with regard to increasing impacts and vulnerability due to growing climate and socioeconomic changes and adaptation and resilience needs of the people of Asia.

Target participants

Journalists from print, TV, radio, or online media who regularly cover environmental issues, especially climate change and its effects, from ICIMOD’s eight Regional Member Countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan).
