In collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW), Afghanistan, a training programme on the application of the J2000 model in the Kabul River basin is being organized. Relevant ministries and universities of Afghanistan including the Ministry of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), Kabul University (KU) and Kabul Polytechnic University (KPU) will be participating.

J2000 is a standard hydrological model within the Jena Adaptable Modelling System (JAMS). The J2000 model has been adapted to represent the importance of hydrological processes in the Himalayan region. Glacier melt processes have been adapted and tested in major river basins, including in the Mount Everest region. JAMS provides a flexible environmental modelling framework based on component-based modelling in which major hydrological processes can be adapted based on data availability in the catchment of interest. Within this flexible modelling environment, other environmental process simulations such as erosion, and nutrient and crop growth modelling can be carried out. The JAMS/J2000 has a very flexible modelling environment, simple graphical user interface, data analysis tool, and online/offline based calibration, sensitivity, and uncertainty analysis toolbox.

Objective

The objective of this training is to co-create knowledge by strengthening the capacity of Afghan partners on water availability assessment by applying the J2000 hydrological model at Gulbahar station in the Panjshir basin of the Kabul River basin.

The specific objectives are:

1. To get familiar with JAMS/J2000 modelling environment
2. To understand the important hydrological processes of the J2000 model
3. To set up the J2000 model in one of the sub-catchment in the Kabul River basin
4. To carry out analysis such as water balance, melt runoff, etc. based on the output of the model
