Introduction to Data Analysis with R

Big data. Small data. Spatial data. Socio-economic data. Time-series data. Data in the cloud.  Data on the ground. No matter what data you collect or what field you work in, if you have data it will require analysis. This four-day training will introduce you to the open access software R, a powerful data analysis tool.

Participants will learn how to import data files, calculate basic descriptive statistics, and visualise their data. Basic programming skills for data analysis, which are transferrable to other languages, will be demonstrated. We will apply R skills to real-world datasets and examine glaciological, meteorological and hydrological datasets, and learn some fundamental concepts in glaciology and glacier hydrology along the way.

Why R? 

R is free. It has a global community with millions of active users, and contains thousands of statistical, mathematical, and graphical functions. There are online forums to help you trouble-shoot and understand your R problems. It creates high-quality graphics that can be used in your manuscripts and reports. R scripts are easily automated, which promotes reproducible research, and can be installed on any system (Windows, Linux, Mac).

Before Joining

Download and install R (www.cran.r-project.org) and R Studio (www.rstudio.com) on your laptop. There will be machines available in the training room if you do not have a laptop.

Schedule

We will cover the basics of data analysis in four days. Coffee/tea breaks in the morning and afternoon and a one-hour lunch break will help you clear your head during the day. The training will be taught tutorial-style, with demonstrations followed by hands-on practice and exercises.
