23 November 2020 to 04 December 2020
The UN Climate Change Dialogues 2020 will enable UNFCCC parties and other stakeholders to exchange views and information to generate momentum for as well as advance the intergovernmental climate change process and showcase the progress made in climate action during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As an intergovernmental organization accorded the status of ‘observer’ by the UNFCCC, ICIMOD is participating in a number of sessions, contributing to events led by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

Addressing knowledge gaps: Biodiversity and climate change adaptation, a Nairobi Work Programme event
We will discuss preliminary findings from a scoping paper titled ‘Biodiversity and climate change adaptation: the role of forest and grasslands ecosystems’, to be published in January 2021. Panellists, including members of the NWP thematic expert group, will explore the co-benefits of integrating forests and grasslands into adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and the prevention of land degradation and desertification.
ICIMOD’s Nakul Chettri will present on how mountain, rangeland and forest biodiversity, and ecosystems contribute towards the fight against climate change. He will also share experiences from the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, focusing on how the restoration of mountain forests and grassland ecosystems helps reduce vulnerabilities to water scarcity.
12:30-14:00 (CET)
Scaling up adaptation actions through partnerships: Addressing knowledge gaps, a Nairobi Work Programme event
At COP 21 in Paris, governments agreed that there is an urgent need to mobilize stronger and more ambitious climate action to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. In spite of a growing understanding of adaptation, knowledge gaps remain a critical barrier to countries implementing adaptation measures.
ICIMOD’s Neera Shrestha Pradhan will discuss our perspective as a regional partner in the Hindu Kush Himalayan sub-region, showcasing outcomes and learnings emerging from a joint study with graduate students from the Harvard Kennedy School to address a LAKI (Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative) knowledge gap on access to information on early warning systems. She will also touch upon the relevance of its output for the region.
