Communications Officer Climate and environmental risks (SG1)
I currently work as a Knowledge Management and Communication Officer for the Mountain Environment Regional Information Systems Regional Programme (MENRIS). At MENRIS, I help further the programmatic goal of supporting environmental management using Earth observation and geospatial technologies through improved evidence-based decision-making processes. I work with thematic leads and geospatial scientists to spread awareness on, and support adoption of the different information systems and services, products and databases developed.
Utsav Maden
How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
I help distil the technical science and make it more comprehensible and accessible to an everyday audience thereby underpinning ICIMOD’s mission to protect the pulse. As part of the larger Knowledge Management and Communication unit, I help ensure that the important knowledge generated is not isolated and or lost.
What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
Working in a multicultural environment and with multidisciplinary colleagues is perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of working at ICIMOD. The ICIMOD campus, and the garden is something that I look forward to every Monday.
What are you passionate about?
The environment, technology, food and photography (in no particular order). I read a lot, have taken a liking to fermenting food, and tinker with the web at utsavmaden.com.np.
My qualifications
I’ve held various positions within the KMC unit at ICIMOD. In earlier roles, I helped drive ICIMOD’s monthly news digest and social media presence, promoted and facilitated the use of various digital engagement tools for ICIMOD’s flagship conferences, moderated multiple communities of practice, and developed a centre wide contact database. I’ve also worked as the Knowledge Management/Communication focal point for Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP), where I developed knowledge products—information sheets, reports, shorts, and videos—and proactively engaged mainstream media. Working at ICIMOD has allowed me to undertake multiple training opportunities on building partnerships, data journalism, data literacy, results-based management, and knowledge sharing, among others. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in environmental science from Kathmandu University in Nepal.
