नेपालसहित चीनको तिब्बत र भारतमा हालै गरिएको अध्ययनमा ३ हजार ६ सय २४ वटा हिमताल पहिचान गरिएका छन् । विगतमा हिमतालबारे यसरी एकीकृत अध्ययन भएको थिएन । म्यानमारदेखि अफगानिस्तानको हिन्दुकुश हिमालय क्षेत्रमा काम गर्ने अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय एकीकृत पर्वतीय विकास केन्द्र (इसिमोड) र संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघीय विकास कार्यक्रम (यूएनडीपी) का विशेषज्ञहरूले कोसी, कर्णाली र गण्डकी जलाधार क्षेत्रलाई आधार मानेर यो अध्ययन गरेका हुन् ।
