Ecosystem Specialist Ecosystem and landscape restoration (SG2-AAD) Resilient mountain economies and landscapes (SG2)
Dr. Srijana Joshi is an Ecosystem Specialist for ICIMOD’s work on Restoring and Regenerating Landscapes. She is a plant ecologist by profession with over 15 years of experience working in the field of ecology and natural resources management.
Her work has focused on the practical application of research in rangeland and wetland management, invasive species, and biodiversity conservation. She is involved in several interdisciplinary projects on ecosystems across multiple countries to address conservation and sustainable use issues in the region.
Srijana has contributed to over 40 publications including peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, working papers, and technical reports. She also edited the book ‘Global plant invasions’ and served as guest editor for several special journal issues.
She holds a PhD in evolutionary ecology of invasive plants from University of Tuebingen, Germany, and a master’s degree in plant ecology from Tribhuvan University, Nepal.

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
I protect the pulse of the planet through my work generating knowledge on issues related to drivers of change in mountains, promoting regional cooperation across transboundary landscapes, and conserving mountain ecosystems to improve the livelihoods of mountain people.
What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
My favorite part of working at ICIMOD is working in a multicultural environment and with diverse partners from our eight regional member countries. ICIMOD has provided me the opportunity to sharpen my skills, learn and grow both personally and professionally. As a working mother, I appreciate the daycare service facilities provided by the Centre.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about working in a mountain ecosystem across the transboundary landscapes in different disciplines, especially enhancing the management of mountain ecosystems including biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.
My qualifications
I have a Ph.D. in the evolutionary ecology of invasive plants from the University of Tuebingen, Germany, and a Master’s degree in plant ecology from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. I am a plant ecologist by profession and have over ten years of experience working specifically in the field of ecology and natural resources management. My main area of academic and professional interest has been integrating scientific knowledge into sustainable development and environmental degradation solutions. I am working in the field that includes rangelands, wetlands and invasive species management and an array of other ecological restoration practices. I have contributed to over 40 papers which include peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, books, working papers, and technical reports.
