Air Pollution Analyst - Mitigation Action for clean air (SG1-AAB) Climate and environmental risks (SG1)
Sagar Adhikari works as the Air Pollution Analyst – Mitigation, overseeing the ICIMOD’s efforts to mitigate air pollution in the Hindu Kush Himalayas. He has held this position since March 2023. Sagar joined ICIMOD in October 2016 as an Emissions Measurement Research Associate and has since progressed through various roles, including Air Pollution Emissions Research Associate.
At ICIMOD, Sagar has made significant contributions to the field of air pollution research and mitigation. His work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and he has presented his research findings at various scientific conferences and workshops. He is dedicated to capacity development and has conducted training programs on air pollution and mitigation for government officials, university students, and technical personnel in countries such as Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
Before joining ICIMOD, he worked as a Programme Officer (Environment) at MinErgy, where he focused on promoting renewable energy in the industrial sectors in Nepal. Earlier he also gained experience as a Research Assistant at the Central Department of Environmental Science, Tribhuvan University where he was involved in various research activities related to environmental issues focusing on air pollution and renewable energy.
Sagar holds a master’s degree in environmental science from Tribhuvan University.

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
Since air pollution is a major problem in the HKH, my work helps to protect the pulse of the planet by reducing the impacts of air pollution on people and helping to save the environment of this region.
What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
The working environment and very cooperative colleagues.
What are you passionate about?
My passion is research and development generating solutions to air pollution impacts.
My qualifications
I hold a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, where I also worked as a research assistant and in various department-led research activities. I also previously worked in MinErgy as a program officer, was involved in research and development activities in the renewable energy sector and air pollution mitigation options, and served as a Science Teacher at Mansingh Dharma Higher Secondary School in Nepal.
