Remote Sensing and GeoInformation Analyst – SERVIR
Ecosystem and landscape restoration (SG2-AAD)
Resilient mountain economies and landscapes (SG2)

Sajana Maharjan is a Remote Sensing and Geo-information Analyst for ICIMOD’s work on Restoring and Regenerating Landscapes. She works for ecosystem and carbon management, particularly land cover monitoring, forest carbon monitoring, and natural capital accounting. She joined ICIMOD in 2015 and has more than a decade of experience in natural resources management.

Previously, Sajana worked for the Forest Resources Assessment Nepal, a bilateral project of the Governments of Nepal and Finland. She also contributed to environmental impact studies of development projects (road, bridge, hydropower, transmission line, and sub-station). She is a Principal Investigator for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) research project on ‘Mapping aboveground forest carbon stocks using ALOS PALSAR time series in Nepal and Bangladesh.’

Sajana holds a master’s degree (MSc) in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, with a specialisation in natural resources management, from ITC, University of Twente, The Netherlands.

Q:

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?

A:

I protect the pulse of the planet through my involvement in retrieving data using Earth observation and geospatial information technology which provides crucial information used in areas such as natural resources management, food security and environment modelling. My work contributes to a better understanding of the spatial patterns of environmental assets such as forest, land and water, and provides a concrete basis for developing management plans and policies.

Q:

What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?

A:

I enjoy working within our multidisciplinary teams, having opportunities to work at different scales from local to regional and seeing our research in use.

Q:

What are you passionate about?

A:

I am always passionate about learning new tools and technologies related to geographic information systems and remote sensing which not only helps me advance my career but also motivates me to help society. In addition, I enjoy visiting new places and people.

Q:

My qualifications

A:

My experiences include working with high to low resolution remote sensing images, image pre-processing, spatial and temporal analysis, field plots design and data collection, and modelling and contributing to remote sensing and GIT capacity building programs.

I have an M.Sc. degree in geo-information science and Earth observation specialising in natural resources management from ITC, University of Twente, the Netherlands and a B.Sc. degree in environmental science from Kathmandu University, Nepal.

Prior to joining ICIMOD, I worked in Forest Resource Assessment Nepal (FRA Nepal) as a GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist. Beside GIS and remote sensing expertise, I also have experience working on environmental impact assessment studies within large infrastructures development projects such as hydropower, transmission lines, bridges and roads.
