The HKH countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan – are all parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and are committed to its biodiversity conservation targets.  The Strategic Plan for Biodiversity (2011-2020) with its embedded Aichi Biodiversity Targets is the overarching global biodiversity framework to implement the CBD. The world is now preparing to adopt the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (2021-2030) building on the previous Strategic Plan (2011-2020) in the upcoming 15^th meeting of the Conference of Parties to CBD (CBD CoP15), to be held from 11 to 14 October 2021 in Kunming, China.This webinar aims to provide a platform to discuss the priority actions needed for sustaining the fragile ecosystems of HKH region and Asia, and draft recommendations for the post-2020 biodiversity targets for the region.

• Discuss priority actions and targets for Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework with special reference to the Programme of Work on Mountain Biodiversity (PoWMB)
• Share success stories and good practices related to targets achieved

• Partner Institutions: UNDP, Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE), Government of Nepal

Expected outcomes

• Consensus on priority actions for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework with particular reference to the PoWMB
• Approval and ownership of the draft reports presented

Our engagement in the run up to COP15

ICIMOD conducted a retrospective analysis of the implementation of the Strategic Plan (2011-2020) for the HKH member countries. It assessed the progress towards the 20 Aichi Targets and the Programme of Work on Mountain Biodiversity (PoWMB) as provisioned for special attention by the CBD. The analysis was based on the Sixth National Report submitted to the CBD Secretariat by the HKH member countries. A report has been prepared based on this assessment.

In addition, we conducted a thorough review of progress against Aichi Target 11 for the South Asia sub-region (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) under the “Global Partnership on Aichi Target 11”. The progress review of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets including Aichi Target 11 and PoWMB is important to recognize and share conservation successes and best practices, identify challenges, and prioritize plans of action for the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework.
