Birendra Bajracharya serves as the Chief of Party of SERVIR-Hindu Kush Himalaya, a joint initiative of NASA and USAID. Using satellite data and geospatial technology, SERVIR co-develops innovative solutions through a network of partners to improve resilience and sustainable resource management at local, national, and regional scales. Birendra has been with ICIMOD since 1995 and has worked extensively on spatial data infrastructure, decision-support systems, and geospatial and remote-sensing applications in relation to disasters, natural resources, biodiversity, and conservation planning and management.

He holds an MSc in geoinformatics, an MBA, and a BE in civil engineering. He represents ICIMOD at the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and was a member of the GEO Post-2025 working group.

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?

A:

SERVIR connects space to village by using satellite data and emerging technologies to address challenges in food security, water resources, weather and climate, land use, and natural disasters in the HKH region and I contribute to protecting the pulse of the planet through managing this work in our region.

What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?

A:

ICIMOD provides a unique opportunity to work with world leaders in science and technology while staying connected to mountain communities, through this work, I enjoy understanding global and regional contexts and building customized solutions.

My qualifications

A:

I have over twenty five years professional experience working on various aspects of remote sensing and geoinformation system applications in relation to natural resources, land cover, biodiversity and conservation planning, decision support systems and spatial data infrastructure and have been involved extensively in developing and delivering various training courses on GIS/RS in all eight HKH countries. I have an MSc in Geo-Informatics from the International Institute of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, the Netherlands, an MBA from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, and BE in Civil Engineering from the University of Rajasthan, India.
