The Hindu Kush Himalaya, which is spread across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan is often referred to as the third pole, since it contains the largest ice mass outside of the two polar regions. It is the water tower of Asia and contains the headwaters of 10 major Asian rivers.

With this campaign, we are generating interest around three key messages from the HKH region based on a review of priorities of HKH countries (as reflected in the HKH Call to Action); climate policies and COVID recovery packages; and consultative engagement with key stakeholders of ICIMOD. These three key messages, or asks, are as follows:
Recognize the HKH as the pulse of the planet - a region that is most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change
Invest in mountain-specific climate priorities to enhance the resilience of mountain communities
Harness the strength of the 8 HKH countries to enhance regional and international cooperation for climate action
2020–2030 is an important decade for climate action. At COP26, Parties to the UNFCCC will communicate their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to limit warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels; increase their ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change; and make finance flows consistent with climate-resilient and low-carbon development pathways.
The clock is ticking, particularly for the HKH, as it hurtles towards an irreversible climate crisis. The Pulse of the Planet is becoming weaker.

ICIMOD STATEMENT
Sustainable mountain agriculture is critical for resilient and inclusive development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. Over the last two decades, mountain communities have become increasingly dependent on external food supplies and distant income sources.
