This session will provide a platform for sharing and discussing high-impact solutions that can deliver climate action in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region at the speed and scale necessary.
There is an urgent need for ambitious climate action in the HKH! Stretching across the mountain regions of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan, the region provides essential ecosystem services that support 1.9 billion people.
A 1.5°C world would result in the loss of one-third of the HKH region’s glacier volume by the end of the century. At current emission trends, two-thirds of the glacier volume will be lost. An increase in temperature along with greater climate variability and extreme weather events will have adverse impacts on mountain livelihoods and economy.
The Nationally Determined Contributions presented by the governments of the region reflect the ambitious climate plans needed to address these impacts. It is therefore necessary to promote ways to deliver these actions at great speed and scale.
