Fieldwork in Langtang - Autumn 2021

About the fieldwork

The expedition is a part of a bi-annual field research and data collection project carried out with our collaborators – Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University in Nepal, Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).

The data collected over the years is being used to determine the state, rate, and magnitude of climate change in the Himalaya, and how these changes might affect the water that these mountains provide to millions of people downstream.

We will be conducting the following activities in the field:

• Glacier mass balance work on Yala Glacier
• Reading out and servicing of weather stations in the catchment
• Installation of sensors for permafrost research
• Interactions with the local community on ongoing research
