Air quality monitoring using interactive dashboard

About the workshop

ICIMOD’s Atmospheric Watch Initiative and SERVIR-HKH Initiative are jointly organizing a one-day training and national consultation workshop to build understanding around air pollution monitoring. The workshop will introduce the newly developed air quality dashboard for improved air quality monitoring. It will also initiate consultations with partners on the usage and capacity building needs around the dashboard as well as content related to air quality modelling and satellite data interpretation.

Participants will gain basic knowledge about air pollution monitoring, remote sensing, and atmospheric modelling. The participants will also work with the interactive air quality dashboard and webpage to view the satellite, model, and in-situ measurements to monitor selected air pollutants.

Expected outcomes

• Enhanced knowledge on use of satellite-based air quality monitoring tools and products
• Exposure to near real-time air quality monitoring using atmospheric models
• Consolidation of participants’ feedback on content and usage related to air quality dashboard for improving the tool

Background

The Atmospheric Watch Initiative – under the Regional Programme on Atmosphere – aims to bring about effective measures and policies for reducing air pollution and its impacts within the HKH region by improving knowledge and enhancing the capacity of partners in the HKH countries. Since its establishment, the Atmospheric Watch Initiative in collaboration with Nepalese and Bhutanese government partners has established state-of-the-art air quality stations with aerosol and trace gas measurement instruments.

SERVIR-HKH, a joint development initiative of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is implemented by ICIMOD as one of five regional hubs of the SERVIR network in its regional member countries, prioritizing activities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. SERVIR works to address critical challenges in climate change, food security, water and related disasters, land use, and air quality. Using satellite data and geospatial technology, SERVIR co-develops innovative solutions through a network of regional hubs to improve resilience and sustainable resource management at local, national and regional scales.
