Break the bias: Towards gender equality in the HKH
Gender team
Kailash Hall
08 March 2022
International Women’s Day (IWD) is observed globally to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while also serving as a call to action for accelerating gender equality. The day marks the relevance and need for an equal world devoid of discrimination on the basis of gender.
IWD is an important day every year at ICIMOD. We celebrate this day to acknowledge and applaud the immeasurable contributions of women and also as an occasion to rally support for women’s rights in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. We also collectively reflect on the challenges to and opportunities for advancing gender equality in the region.
The IWD 2022 campaign theme #BreakTheBias and the UN Women theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” recognize the contributions of women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and building a more sustainable future for all. Building on these two themes, the theme for the IWD 2022 at ICIMOD is “Break the bias: Towards gender equality in the HKH”.
Parts of the day’s agenda include:
Special video: “Women frontliners for climate action”
“Break the bias” competition – Presentations by ICIMOD initiatives – Facilitated by Suman Bisht, Senior Gender Specialist, ICIMOD
Presentation on the HKH gender gap – Chanda Gurung Goodrich, Senior Gender Specialist, Gender Lead, ICIMOD
