About the webinar

As one of the partners of the “SDC support to the IPCC” project, we are joining hands with the TERI School of Advanced Studies (SAS), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Helvetas, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), and the University of Zurich to organize this special webinar.

This webinar aims to:

• Increase the awareness and utilization of the outcomes from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) to enhance application of climate science in shaping climate and sustainable development policies
• Communicate findings from the special cross-chapter paper on “Mountains”
• Enhance understanding of the IPCC process and encourage engagement of early career researchers in the IPCC processes

TERI SAS will coordinate the webinar, and Philippus Wester from ICIMOD will facilitate a break-out group session on the cross-chapter paper on “Mountains”.

Background

The recently published IPCC AR6 highlights the interdependence of climate, biodiversity, and people. It integrates natural, social, and economic sciences more strongly than earlier IPCC assessments and emphasizes the urgency of immediate action to address climate risks.

The report Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability (AR6 WGII) published by Working Group II focuses on how we are currently adapting to climate changes, and what adaptation responses may be needed in the future.

The AR6 WGII report is significant to our work in the Hindu Kush Himalaya as it also contains a cross-chapter paper on “Mountains”, which synthesizes key relevant content from the report with a broader focus on the impacts and adaptation to climate change in mountain regions. This cross-chapter provides a wider assessment of the solutions space and consequences for sustainable development due to climate change in mountain regions and downstream areas.
