PARTNER CONSULTATION
SG 1: Reducing Climate and Environmental Risks & Action Area A: Managing Cryosphere and Water Risk
Mette Resort, Paro, Bhutan
09 August 2023 to 10 August 2023
Organisers: AAA: Managing Cryosphere and Water Risk, ICIMOD and National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM), Bhutan
This consultation meeting will bring together key institutions in Bhutan working on cryosphere assessment, river basin management, and climate change and disaster risk reduction (DRR). During the meeting, ICIMOD will brief partner institutions in Bhutan on the new Strategy 2030 and Medium-Term Action Plan (MTAP) V (2023–2026) and on producing joint work plans to further strengthen collaboration and partnership. In addition, the workshop will provide the opportunity to identify other key areas for cooperation with relevant partners in Bhutan with ICIMOD’s Strategic Group (SG1): Reducing Climate and Environment Risks.
The event is organised by the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM), Bhutan in collaboration with ICIMOD’s Action Area A: Managing Cryosphere and Water Risks under Strategic Group (SG) 1: Reducing Climate and Environment Risks, supported by the governments of Norway and Switzerland.
This consultation will include representatives from national institutions related to cryosphere, water resource management, and disaster risk preparedness, as well as academia and subject specialists in water, cryosphere, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and preparedness, and river basin management.
ICIMOD has developed a new roadmap in the form of Strategy 2030 and MTAP V (2023–2026) to enhance cooperation and collaboration for a greener, more inclusive, and climate-resilient HKH. With this new direction, ICIMOD is embarking on a new four-year cycle, committed to driving policy and practice.
Bhutan has an extensive area under cryosphere coverage and is particularly vulnerable to cryosphere- and water-related hazards. NCHM and ICIMOD have been collaborating for more than two decades in cryosphere, GLOF and hydro-meteorological related regional projects. ICIMOD has supported capacity enhancement of NCHM in the areas of cryosphere monitoring, glacier and glacier lake inventory and hazard assessment, flood modelling and forecasting, satellite rainfall predictions, and internships of young employees.
