HI-GRID project and GEDSI Orientation

About the event

We are organising an inception workshop for our project “Building capabilities for green, climate resilient, and inclusive development in the Lower Koshi River Basin (HI-GRID).” The meeting will familiarise our implementing partners – local NGOs and 28 municipalities offices in the lower Koshi Basin – with the project activities. The meeting will inform the participants on the project activities and requirements and explore synergies among the partners for cross-learning and out scaling, where possible.

Objectives

The workshop aims to enhance collaboration, promote learning, and strengthen the implementation of the project through cross-learning. The objectives of the inception workshop are to:

• Introduce the HI-GRID project and co-design implementation plan, and explore opportunities for scaling
• Orientation on Gender Equity, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) framework and discuss its importance in the context of disaster risk reduction (DRR)
• Raise awareness on promoting inclusion with special focus on disability among participants

Background

The HI-GRID project in the Lower Koshi River Basin (LKRB) aims to build the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impacts of climate change, particularly in the context of water risks arising from both too much and too little water. The LKRB is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, with projections indicating an increase in both temperature and precipitation in the coming decades. An increasing population lives in the vulnerable areas of LKRB where urbanisation and floodplain encroachment are adding pressure to the fresh water and ecosystem of the region apart from increasing the vulnerability of communities to floods.

To address these challenges, the project takes a comprehensive approach that addresses both hazards and vulnerabilities, while also empowering local governments to take action. This includes devising solutions using a GEDSI framework and strengthening the capability of local governments to address the challenge caused by too much and too little water. The project aims to promote pathways towards green, sustainable, and inclusive development by ensuring that vulnerable communities are more resilient to climate, environmental, and socio-economic risks and have access to new and alternative livelihood opportunities.

The project approach aligns well with the Government of Nepal’s wider green, resilient, and inclusive development (GRID) framework and also contributes to Nepal’s commitments made at COP26, its National Adaptation Plan, and to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which all prioritise protecting the population from climate change, making progress towards net-zero, and promoting green jobs.
