An Advanced Community-based Flood Early Warning System

Pilot testing of an advanced community-based flood early warning system with telemetry (CBFEWS with telemetry) was successfully conducted at Khokhana in Kathmandu on 28 March 2017. A joint team comprising of officials from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), and the Community Based Flood and Glacial Lake Outburst Risk Reduction Project (CFGORRP/DHM) paid a field visit to the site for observation. The CBFEWS with telemetry is an ultrasonic based water level monitoring system custom engineered by experts from ICIMOD’s CBFEWS team and Sustainable Eco Engineering (SEE). It uses telemetry for wider dissemination of flood warning information to vulnerable communities. Plans are underway to install this advanced system in Nepal’s Ratu and Gagan rivers during the pre-monsoon season in 2017.
