Pakistan contributes core support to ICIMOD with the Ministry of National Food Security and Research as nodal ministry for ICIMOD in Pakistan.

The incumbent Secretary of Ministry of National Food Security and Research formally represents in the ICIMOD Board of Governors. Pakistan and ICIMOD have been working together for the mountain agenda in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region with policy-makers, experts, planners, and practitioners.  ICIMOD provides support to Pakistan in terms of capacity building, strengthening institutional capacity, research and demonstrations and providing regional and international platforms through workshops, conferences and symposia to share knowledge.

Together with Pakistan, ICIMOD has been emphasing the importance of enhancing and strengthening partnerships to develop and customize methodologies and tools and also to carry out innovative applied research to support future programme development. ICIMOD’s partner institutes in Pakistan include government agencies, academies, local research institutions, universities, and NGOs.

Pakistan-ICIMOD Day

The 45th ICIMOD Board of Governors meeting was held in Islamabad in 2014. Coinciding with the Board meeting, the Pakistan-ICIMOD Day was organised in close cooperation and support from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R), Government of Pakistan.  The date was chosen to coincide with ICIMOD’s 45th Board of Governors meeting, so that its Board of Governors could have a chance to see firsthand the work that it is conducting in Pakistan and also to give them a chance to interact with the partners.

The key objective of the event was to provide an opportunity for mutual learning, sharing, and networking among the national partners in Pakistan with regard to ICIMOD programme implementation.

The event also helped to showcase the work done by ICIMOD’s partners in Pakistan for increased ownership and visibility and to help develop greater synergy with national programs. The target audience included ICIMOD’s partner organizations in Pakistan who are either already involved in helping to implement its programmes and share knowledge and experience and/or those who are potential partners for future endeavours; these include: government agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic and research organizations, community-based organizations, development organization, network and media partners in implementing its programmes and sharing knowledge and experience in fields of mutual interest. Overall, the Pakistan-ICIMOD day was important to strengthen ICIMOD’s engagement and enhance partnerships which will mobilize support for sustainable development challenges and regional cooperation in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.
