Bangladesh

  • Oxfam
    Oxfam aims to help poor communities, particularly women, to better prepare for and cope with disasters. This includes prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery and rehabilitation work; irrespective of all hazards, all risks, all sectors and all terrains.
  • Concern Universal Bangladesh
    Concern Universal has been implementing the Community Based Approaches to Disaster Preparedness (CBADP) Project in partnership with Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) since March 2006. This is an innovative project for Concern Universal in the field of Disaster Preparedness and Risk Management.
  • ActionAid Bangladesh DIEPCHO Project
    Under its third Action plan, DIPECHO is working with ActionAid and four other implementing partners in Bangladesh – Concern Universal, Handicap International, Islamic Relief and Oxfam GB. There is a strong coordination mechanism in place between these partners as they regularly come together to coordinate their work. This coordination mechanism is of key importance to avoid duplication of activities, but also to exchange experiences thoughts and ideas to increase the effectiveness of the program. The DIPECHO partners work together to push a common agenda to include disaster preparedness activities on national policy level. In addition, the coordination group serves as a platform to join forces in their relief response in case of a disaster in Bangladesh.
  • Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM)
    The Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) pursues research and capacity development in the field of water and flood management that is vital for economic development and social prosperity of the country. The Institute also provides advisory and consultancy services to government and non-government organizations.
  • Bangladesh Meteorological Department
    Bangladesh Meteorological Department is the authorised Government organisation for all meteorological activities in the country. It maintains a network of surface and upper air observatories, radar and satellite stations, agro-meteorological observatories, geomagnetic and seismological observatories and meteorological telecommunication system.

  • UNDP in Nepal
    The UNDP in Nepal has experience of over 2 decades of engaging with the disaster management sector in the country. Beginning initially with support for post disaster response and relief, the engagement since has moved towards supporting disaster risk mainstreaming into development issues. Post the Yokohama conference in 1994, UNDP has assisted Government of Nepal GoN in the institutionalization of disaster risk reduction. In Nepal, the cornerstone of UNDP’s strategy is to comprehensively link disaster risk reduction with development. In recent times, the UNDP’s engagement has spread out from institutional development to community level initiatives for basic disaster management.
  • UNICEF Nepal
    UNICEF Nepal developed a DP plan in 2001 as part of the UN Disaster Response Preparedness Plan which focused on the earthquake scenario in the Kathmandu Valley, which has been a priority for UNICEF Nepal. This was further updated in 2003 and the vulnerability of the Kathmandu Valley water supply systems was undertaken. Hence, in the current DIPECHO project, UNICEF aims to provide emergency water supply for surviving population in LSMC areas as a pilot project and it proposes to undertake the current intervention plan through collaborative efforts and partnership agreements with local agencies such as, LSMC, NWSC and DWSS authorities.
  • Nepal Red Cross Society
    Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS)has been involved in the Community Based Disaster Preparedness Program (CBDP) since 1997. Their CBDP program aims to organize and empower the local community with the knowledge and skills to carry out the disaster preparedness activities themselves, which include hazard mitigation, reduction of vulnerabilities and establishing linkages with local organizations who provide support for managing the disaster. The current DIPECHO project is in line with NRCS’ efforts and addresses the needs of six branches in districts with a population vulnerable to disasters. It is a pilot project, replicable in other branches where disasters are part of daily life. It is the first step of a longer-term commitment to initiate disaster preparedness/risk reduction activities involving the communities themselves in the design and implementation, thereby creating a sense of ownership and a proactive partnership as opposed to a reactive passive response.

India

  • Solution Exchange for the Disaster Management Community in India
    The Disaster Management Community is a group of professionals from a wide range of organizations and disciplines concerned with preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery and rehabilitation issues with respect to disasters (natural and human induced). Solution Exchange connects the members of this Community and increases the effectiveness of their individual efforts, helping them share and apply each other’s knowledge and experience. Through Solution Exchange, Disaster Management professionals can turn to their peers across India for solutions to the day-to-day challenges they face.
  • Focus
    In India, FOCUS PMP initiatives operate in seven states. FOCUS facilities the development of annual, comprehensive disaster response plans in local communities enabling families to be better informed about the potential consequences of natural and manmade disasters. FOCUS works in collaboration with local schools, hospitals, specialist institutes as well as their stakeholders to ensure these communities are increasingly aware of what can be done to minimise potential dangers.

  • Department of Earthquake Engineering
    The Department of Earthquake Engineering is the only one of its kind in India and amongst a few in the world. Established in 1960 as School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering, the department has been actively engaged in teaching, basic and applied research, and providing consultancy services in the seismic design of almost all major engineering projects in the country, with an aim of mitigating disasters caused by earthquakes.

Pakistan

  • MercyCorps
    In areas affected by October’s massive earthquake, MercyCorps continues to repair village water systems and schools, and to provide medical care to thousands each week in tented health facilities. Elsewhere, our efforts are improving health, water access and livelihoods for resident and Afghan refugee populations.
  • IRC
    As one of the first organizations to respond to the earthquake that devastated Pakistan on Oct. 8, 2005, the IRC treated thousands of the sick and injured and distributed emergency supplies, tools, and material for shelter. The IRC also helps local communities become sustainable and reduce their dependency on international assistance.
  • Oxfam
    Drought and cyclones are a fact of life in many areas of Pakistan but when particularly extreme conditions hit communities, Oxfam provides emergency support to the most vulnerable families. On a longer-term basis, we are working with government and other emergency-relief organisations on strategies will enable communities to limit the most damaging effects of drought and cyclones.
  • Focus
    FOCUS Pakistan’s Prevention, Mitigation and Preparedness programme is based on a strategy of community preparedness and local capacity building which aims to reduce the vulnerability of over half a million people living in the mountainous Northern Areas of Pakistan against natural disasters.
  • Pakistan Meteorological Department
    The Pakistan Meteorological Department is both a scientific and a service department, and functions under the Ministry of Defence. It is responsible for providing meteorological service throughout Pakistan to wide variety of interest and for numerous public activities and projects which require weather information.

Others

  • Disaster Watch
    Disaster Watch aid grassroots women’s collectives to exchange learn and evaluate disaster response initiatives and the performance of government and aid agencies. First held in Gujarat in February 2002, a year after the earthquake, when a team of women from disaster sites in Turkey and India travelled there to monitor institutional support for women communities.
  • International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC)
    International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC) maintains and develops relationships with scientific research and academic organizations, civil defense agencies, and the general public in order to carry out its mission to mitigate the hazards associated with tsunamis by improving tsunami preparedness for all Pacific Ocean nations.

  • Group on Earth Observation
    The intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is leading a worldwide effort to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) over the next 10 years.GEOSS will work with and build upon existing national, regional, and international systems to provide comprehensive, coordinated Earth observations from thousands of instruments worldwide, transforming the data they collect into vital information for society.
  • African Centre for Disaster Studies
    The African Centre for Disaster Studies (ACDS) aims to address the research as well as training and education needs in disaster risk within southern Africa and the wider African continent. Since 2002 the Centre has embarked on various research, training and consultancy projects at local, provincial, national as well as international level, and in the process has developed a considerable network of professionals in the multi-disciplinary field of disaster risk reduction.

HKH Region

  • SAARC Disaster Management Centre (SDMC)
    SAARC Disaster Management Centre (SDMC) was set up in October 2006 at the premises of National Institute of Disaster Management in New Delhi. The Centre has the mandate to serve eight Member Countries of South Asia Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – by providing policy advice and facilitating capacity building services including strategic learning, research, training, system development and exchange of information for effective disaster risk reduction and management in South Asia.
  • Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN)
    Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN)aims to promote coordination and collaboration among NGOs and other stakeholders for effective and efficient disaster reduction and response in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Duryog Nivaran South Asian Network for Disaster Risk Reduction
    Duryog Nivaran is a research, training and advocacy network committed to promoting disaster risk reduction in South Asia at policy and community level. It strives to build the knowledge base of stakeholders by sharing research findings, information, experiences and insights on emerging issues of disaster management in the countries and among the communities of the region.
  • South Asian Floods
    The objective of South Asian Floods (SAF) is to promote regional cooperation in sharing of hydro-meteorological information which would lead to the reduction in flood vulnerability by providing timely and reliable warning to save people’s lives and property. This will improve the economic condition of the population in this region and help in poverty alleviation.

International

  • dqCommunity Disaster Prevention and Response
    The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC (CSIS) and the Development Gateway have partnered to develop two new online communities: Disaster Prevention and Response, and Stabilization and Reconstruction. These portals will provide a virtual space where participants can share knowledge, lessons learned, best practices, and other information in an effort to build capacity, strengthen working relationships, and improve development outcomes in these areas. Social networking tools will be used to bring disparate actors together in a common forum where issues of mutual interest can be discussed and problems solved. In particular, both portals will address the unique challenges of civil-military coordination in post-conflict and disaster response scenarios. Particular emphasis will be placed on bringing together non-traditional partners, including government agencies, international organizations and NGOs in both developed and developing countries.

    The mission of ICHARM is to function as the Centre of Excellence to provide and assist implementation of best practicable strategies to localities, nations, regions, and the globe to manage the risk of water related disasters.
  • Earthquakes and Megacities Initiatives
    EMI is an international, not-for-profit, scientific organization dedicated to the reduction of disaster risk in megacities and major metropolises. It was founded in 1998 in response to the urgent need to stimulate urban earthquake preparedness and mitigation in developing countries. EMI serves as a catalyst for the delivery of scientific and technical knowledge to local government officials,?policymakers, practitioners, and disaster management technical personnel.
