Agenda

About the training

Together with the University of Leeds, Kathmandu University, Tribhuvan University, we are organising a training on how to monitor and observe changing water resources for our partners in Nepal. ICIMOD’s part of this work is implemented by Action Area A – Managing Cryosphere and Water Risks under the Strategic Group (SG-1) on Reducing Climate and Environment Risks with support from the Government of Norway.

A weeklong training will train the attendees in using the latest technologies, methods, and data analysis skills related to environmental change and climate adaptation. Training sessions are designed to enhance student employability, increase the likelihood of securing coveted PhD research positions, contribute to knowledge generation and sustainable development within their respective home countries.

Training objectives

  • Enhance proficiency in remote sensing and low-cost sensor technologies:
    • Through a focused session on Google Earth Engine (GEE) for analysing satellite imagery and monitoring hydrological changes.
    • With a session on deploying and using low-cost sensors for real-time water quality and quantity monitoring.
  • Develop advanced field survey and measurement skills:
    • By training participants in ‘Structure from Motion (SfM)’ techniques, Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS), Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), and bathymetry techniques for detailed mapping and subsurface investigations.
    • Session on effective discharge measurement methods and weather station setup for accurate climate and hydrological data collection.
  • Promote integrated water resource management practices:
    • Encourage attendees to integrate remote sensing, in-situ measurements, and geospatial analysis for comprehensive monitoring.
    • Equip participants with the knowledge to develop and implement sustainable water management strategies in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region

Background

The training is part of the University of Leeds ‘s International Strategy Fund (ISF) for the 2023-2024 academic year. This initiative aims to incentivize and facilitate international collaboration among academic colleagues, emphasizing the university’s strengths in global engagement across research, innovation, and student education. A key focus of the ISF involves addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular emphasis on SDG4 – Quality Education.
