Hanoi, Vietnam
20 October 2022
Following interruptions by the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Federation of Asian Brick Kiln Associations (FABKA) will convene for the fifth FABKA meeting to finalise the roadmap which had been drafted during the fourth FABKA meeting in October 2019 in Pokhara, Nepal. The roadmap will serve as a strategic guiding document for executing FABKA’s plans and its future as an independent legal entity. The meeting will also serve as a platform for cross-learning among brick entrepreneurs from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan on technologies, practices, and the collective way forward for brick kilns in Asia.
FABKA was formed to promote exchange of knowledge, technologies, and good practices, focusing on economically and environmentally favourable and sustainable solutions for the production of fired clay bricks and tiles among the member countries and across the region, through cooperation in policy advocacy. Current members include the Bangladesh Brick Manufacturing Owners Association (BBMOA), All India Brick and Tile Manufacturers Federation (AIBTMF), Federation of Nepal Brick Industries (FNBI), and Brick Kiln Owners Association of Pakistan (BKOAP).
The first FABKA meeting convened in February 2018 at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu, Nepal, where all members (representing brick associations of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan) agreed on the Kathmandu Declaration, which served as an early draft of the FABKA constitution. During the second meeting in November 2018 in China, members prepared the second draft of the FABKA constitution. Members then revised and finalised the constitution during the third meeting in Bangkok in June 2019.
The constitution covers FABKA’s composition, purpose, and scope, with an express commitment to capacity building, regional cooperation, modernisation, improvement of social wellbeing of stakeholders, and economically viable and environment-friendly approaches. Significantly, during the third meeting, the federation’s scope was changed from South Asia to Asia (and FABKA’s full form accordingly amended) to foster South–South learning and to adopt cleaner technologies from countries like China, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
