Understanding the IPCC assessment process: nominations of experts and other pathways for engagement in the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) preparation

Background

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has initiated the preparation of its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). At its 62nd session in Hangzhou, China, the IPCC Panel finalised the report’s outline to assess the contributions of its three key working groups. To ensure a diverse, inclusive, and robust pool of experts for this process, the IPCC calls for nominations of contributors from different fields. IPCC requests to submit nominations between 7 March and 17 April. IPCC also identified other engagement pathways. Aside from authorship, experts can contribute to the development and preparation of the AR7 as reviewers, or by submitting relevant scientific literature, knowledge, and evidence.

To facilitate broader engagement and awareness of the process, ICIMOD is hosting a regional webinar featuring IPCC Bureau members to bring in understanding of the process of nominations of experts and other pathways of engagement for the AR7. The overall objective is to have more regional experts engaging in the AR7 process to enhance contributions from the Hindu Kush Himalaya region. Hence, the webinar aims to inform interested experts on the nomination process, report preparation timeframe, and the other ways experts can contribute to the AR7.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this regional webinar are:

  • To raise awareness about the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report process.
  • To inform potential expert-contributors about the nomination procedure and selection criteria.
  • To encourage a diverse range of experts, including those from underrepresented regions and disciplines, to engage with IPCC.
  • To facilitate HKH experts’ participation in IPCC climate assessments.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased awareness among experts in the HKH region about IPCC’s expert nomination process and other pathways of engagement in the AR7 preparation.
  • A more diverse and regionally represented pool of nominated experts for AR7.
  • Strengthened collaboration between ICIMOD and IPCC in advancing climate science and policy discussions.
