The Hindu Kush Karakoram Pamir Landscape (HKPL), which is bisected by the ancient Silk Road, is experiencing rapid change, driven by global climate change as well as other social and economic drivers. The governments of the countries that make up the landscape – Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, and Tajikistan – and the communities living within the landscape are already dealing with the cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of these changes. In addition, ambitious infrastructure development projects like China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) are under development. It is important to consider the potential impacts on the landscape’s people and unique cultural and natural heritage, including the landscape’s network of national parks and protected areas.
