ICIMOD is participating in several key international meetings this November in Glasgow, UK, during the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) at the UN Climate Change Conference. At this global gathering, ICIMOD will organize several events at the Cryosphere Pavilion as a part of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) Focus Day on 9 November 2021.
As an intergovernmental organization with observer status accorded by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), ICIMOD will also closely observe the main proceedings and negotiations that take place during the plenary sessions.

Hosted by Ministry of Climate Change, Pakistan and ICIMOD
This event will showcase the successful transition of Pakistan’s traditional, unregulated brick sector into a formal, responsible sector that is setting an example in mitigating transboundary air pollution through adoption of cleaner zig-zag technology that also has social and economic benefits.

Learning Café on communicating indigenous and ancestral knowledge for climate actions in Amazonia, Andes and Hindu-Kush Himalaya
Jointly hosted by Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development – Himalayan University Consortium (ICIMOD-HUC), and Organización Nacional de Mujeres Indígenas Andinas y Amazónicas del Perú (ONAMIAP)

11:45–12:55 UK GMT | Resilience Hub, COP26
Resilience from Source to Sea in South Asia
The event showcases resilience interventions being delivered from ‘Source to Sea’ in South Asia with an emphasis on scaling up practical solutions and bringing in civil society and community voices to show that local adaptation works and can be scaled. It will be anchored in the Resilience Hub at COP26 and will be a virtual event ‘stopping in’ at various points from the high mountains to the plains and sea – and highlighting how climate finance is being used to build resilience and support community adaptation.
The event aims to call for COP26 to agree to increased investment in local level solutions and ensure support reaches the most vulnerable.

A fragile future: Can mountain communities adapt to climate change?
The focus of the event will be on impacts and risks of climate change on the cryosphere, as well as good adaptation solutions and experiences, especially in mountain areas.

From the award-winning filmmaker Craig Leeson, most notably for A Plastic Ocean
The film is scheduled for release globally in all IMAX Theatres in March 2022
Craig and his team went around the world, from the poles to mountain regions in all continents to document glaciers and to present what is happening to them. For their section looking at the Himalayas, ICIMOD helped in networking and facilitated their meeting with regional experts.

Mountains of opportunity: Ministerial dialogue to scale up investment in mountain-specific climate priorities in the HKH region
The event will introduce “Mountains of opportunity” – an investment framework to help the HKH countries mobilize resources for investment in mountain-specific climate priorities.

The event will showcase Nepal’s approach to increasing investment in low carbon development and resilience.

Cryosphere science and adaptation solutions to scale up climate action in the HKH
This event will provide a platform for the dissemination of high-impact solutions that can deliver climate action in the HKH region at the speed and scale necessary.

Elevating adaptation action in mountains: From the Andes to the Alps, Carpathians and Hindu Kush Himalaya
Policy and youth perspectives on climate action + Launch of the HKH theme song
The event will provide a platform for policy makers and researchers on exchanging opportunities for cooperation to scale up adaption solutions for mountains. Youth from different mountains regions will also share their perspectives on the need for climate action. We will also be launching the HKH theme song music video.

HKH cryosphere cèilidh: Networking reception
This informal session will recap the proceedings of the day (with key messages) and will also include the launch of the HKH theme song music video and the screening of the Sustainable Summits film.
