TRAINING

Advance-level data training of design-based action research and writeshop

Venue

Dhulikhel, Nepal

Date & Time

06 June 2024 to 10 June 2024

Agenda

About the training

Under Green Resilient Agricultural Productive Ecosystems: Field of Action 2 (GRAPE FA 2), ICIMOD is engaging students and young researchers in collaborative action research to co-create knowledge for building resilience of agroecosystem.

As a part of building their capacity on collaborative action research especially in effective data collection, data entry, and data management practices, ICIMOD organised a two-day orientation on data collection and management in action research in June 2023. Now, to build their capacity in cleaning, preparing, analysing, visualising, communicating data and producing knowledge product, GRAPE FA 2, in collaboration with the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) is organising a five-day advance-level data analysis training and writeshop.

This event is intended to equip the young researchers and development professional involved in the implementation of the GRAPE action research with necessary knowledge and skills to effectively carry out their research activities and knowledge product development.

Objective

The main objective of the training is to build and strengthen the participants’ knowledge of:

  • Cleaning and preparing data
  • Analysing data
  • Visualising and communicating data
  • Understanding academic and/or persuasive writing
  • Individual outline of participants’ knowledge product

Resource persons

Dr Santosh Marahatta

Santosh Marahatta is an Associate Professor at Agriculture and Forestry University. With a Ph.D. in Cropping System Agronomy from Tribhuvan University, his expertise spans a wide array of domains including biological and socioeconomic research, data management, crop simulation modelling, and environmental impact assessment.

Dr Grady Walker

Dr Grady Walker is a visual methods action researcher focusing on education, agriculture, and rural livelihoods in the context of climate change. He received his master’s degree in environmental conservation education from New York University and his doctorate in communication for social change from The University of Queensland, Australia.

Background

As part of the GRAPE project, ICIMOD is taking the lead in implementing GRAPE FA 2 – action research – in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces of Nepal. The focus of GRAPE FA2 is on building resilience of agroecosystems through action research and the production of knowledge to foster climate-resilient food production and enhance digital access for farmers (to agro-advisories, weather forecasting, and market information services) in selected demonstration sites. The approaches and innovative solutions developed will be scaled by sharing the knowledge and lessons learned and engaging with policymakers and line agencies at the provincial and national levels.

ICIMOD has partnered with Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) to undertake action research in Karnali and Sudurpachim provinces. The project will involve students and young research faculties from AFU, Far Western University (FWU), Mid-Western University (MWU), and young student researchers who were selected for the Embrace Equity Grant in the action research.

GRAPE is jointly planned and financed by the European Union, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
