About the SANDEE Winter School in Research Methods (WSRM)

SANDEE, as part of its commitment to building research capacity in the HKH region and South Asia, is organising the SANDEE Winter School in Research Methods (WSRM). The aim of the WSRM is to provide hands-on training and guidance to grantees on data analysis, result interpretation, and manuscript preparation for peer-reviewed publication.

The WSRM is an invite-only event, which will be attended by SANDEE grantees who have already completed or are nearing grant completion. Along with dedicated sessions, the participants will receive tailored one-to-one and one-to-two mentoring from the resource persons aimed at producing impactful and policy-relevant research output.

Topics Covered

  • Writing introduction, discussion, and conclusions
  • Conducting econometric analysis, including estimation, reporting and robustness check
  • Visualizing data, presenting tables, and figures
  • Performing policy analysis/simulation based on econometric results
  • Promoting gender equality and social inclusion in research
  • Tailoring writing style and structure for effective and engaging communication

 

Resource Persons

A. K. Enamul Haque

A. K. Enamul Haque is Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Academic Advisor at UCSI University, Bangladesh Branch Campus and Executive Director at the Asian Center for Development. With a prolific career spanning over decades, his expertise lies in environmental economics, climate change, and sustainable development. A leading voice in policy circles, Haque’s research contributions have significantly influenced national and international dialogues on environmental policy formulation and economic development strategies. He holds master’s degrees in economics and agricultural economics, and a doctoral degree in natural resource economics from the University of Guelph, Canada. Haque has been a SANDEE faculty advisor for the past 20 years.


Pranab Mukhopadhyay

Pranab Mukhopadhyay is Professor of Economics and Vice-Dean (Research) at the Goa Business School at Goa University, India. He is a fellow of SANDEE and INSEE, and formerly President of INSEE (2016 – 18). Earlier, he worked as an environmental economist for IUCN, Nepal. He is the current editor of Ecology, Economy, and Society – the INSEE Journal. His research interests include managing commons, nature and society, sustainable development, ecosystem services, and economic growth. Pranab studied economics at Presidency College, Calcutta and Jawaharlal Nehru University, India.


Mani Nepal

Mani Nepal is the SANDEE Programme Coordinator and Lead Economist at ICIMOD. He manages SANDEE’s research activities, coordinates training programmes, and mentors SANDEE researchers. He has served as an Adjunct Professor at the Agriculture and Forestry University and Associate Professor at Tribhuvan University in Nepal; Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico, USA; Visiting Professor at Kathmandu University, and distinguished Visiting Professor at Kyoto University. He has also held the position of Senior Economist at the Department of Finance and Administration, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. He has an MS degree in policy economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a PhD in environmental/development economics and applied econometrics from the University of New Mexico, USA.


A. M. Tanvir Hussain

A. M. Tanvir Hussain is currently Environmental Economist at SANDEE-ICIMOD. He is an applied environmental economist by training, his work focuses on using economic principles to tackle environmental challenges, particularly related to biodiversity, ecosystem services, climate change, and project impact assessments. He is currently on leave from his position as Associate Professor of Economics at East West University in Bangladesh, where he has taught courses in microeconomic theory, mathematical economics, environmental economics, and environmental valuation. Tanvir has also worked as post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Lueneburg and later at the University of Freiburg in Germany. He holds PhD in Economics degree from the University of Wyoming, USA, with specialisation in environmental and natural resource economics.


Shiba Satyal Banskota

Shiba Satyal Banskota is currently the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Lead at ICIMOD. Her expertise includes GESI-focused research on climate change, water, agriculture, energy, disaster risk reduction, GESI mainstreaming, policy advocacy, capacity building, and programme development. She is focused on advancing GESI in development policies and programmes in collaboration with government and non-government development partners. Shiba has over 20 years of experience working on GESI-related issues at organizations such as Plan International, UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia and the World Health Organization (WHO). Shiba holds a PhD in Gender and Development from the State University of New York, USA.


Gillian Summers

Gillian Summers is Senior Editor at ICIMOD since February 2023. In this role, she manages the editorial team and external editors, overseeing written content produced by ICIMOD, from blogs to project proposals, funders’ reports and a range of articles for the media. Her focus on the quality and language of ICIMOD’s written work aims to improve readability and better take-up of its research. Prior to this, Gillian was based in the UK, where she had been Communications Specialist at the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) – a specialist research, development, and education organisation of the University of Greenwich. She also has experience working in communications in a range of organisations in Mexico, including at the CGIAR Generation Challenge Programme (GCP), based at the Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), in the private sector and in education.
