State of the Cryosphere in the Himalaya: Focus on Sikkim and the Eastern Himalaya—Gaps, Challenges, and Opportunities

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is co-organizing an upcoming conference, “State of the Cryosphere in the Himalaya: Focus on Sikkim and the Eastern Himalaya—Gaps, Challenges, and Opportunities”, set to be held in Gangtok, Sikkim, India.

The Sikkim chapter of the Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) and the Department of Science and Technology and Climate Change, Government of Sikkim, will host the conference.

The event aims to bring together scientists, policy makers, students, and local communities to understand the latest scientific developments in glaciology and the needs and problems of local communities. The deliberations are aimed at institutionalizing a mechanism to develop a policy framework where scientific research can address societal needs and prepare the society to adapt to the changing times through various mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The plenary sessions will cover:

  • Cryosphere and Climate Change
  • Best Practices in Cryosphere Studies
  • Glacier Hydrology
  • Cryosphere and Land-Use Changes

The technical sessions will cover:

  • Cryosphere investigations in Sikkim
  • Cryosphere investigations in the Himalaya with a focus on the Eastern Himalaya
  • Disaster monitoring, assessment, and mitigation strategies
  • Panel discussion with parallel sessions on:
    • Strengthening policies
    • Strategies and priorities to guide future research
CALL FOR PAPERS

Conference organizers are inviting researchers working on relevant topics to present (oral or poster presentations) under the following themes:

  • Cryosphere investigations in Sikkim
  • Cryosphere investigations in the Himalaya with a focus on the Eastern Himalaya
  • Disaster monitoring, assessment, and mitigation strategies related to cryosphere: Case studies

Registration by invitation only. Limited funds to support travel and stay for selected students. All local hospitality in Sikkim, including accommodation and pick up from Bagdogra Airport/NJP Train Station, shall be borne by the organizers.
