Venue

Salleri Army Barrack, Dhankuta

Date & Time

19 May 2023

About the event

As per the request of the Nepal Army Office in Dhankuta, we are organising a training on the ‘Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring System’ in Nepal to build capacity and optimise the use of this web-based application among army officials in Dhankuta. The training is aligned with the activities of the Nibuwa-Tankhuwa Watershed Management Plan, a comprehensive management plan co-developed by multiple stakeholders and implemented by Dhankuta and Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality.

Objective

The overall objective of this one-day training is to provide hands-on training on the updated version of the ‘Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring System’ web application for the army officials.

The training is facilitated by Strategic Group 1: Reducing Climate and Environmental Risks, Action Area A: Managing Cryosphere and Water Risk.

Background

Nepal experiences a high number of forests fires every year, especially during the dry season from March to June. These fires damage forest ecosystems, property, and livestock, and affect human lives. Geospatial technology can play a significant role in preparing to reduce the risk of forest fire occurrences, managing forest fires by providing precise near-real-time fire locations predicting fire risk areas. The technology can also help disseminate information through a web-based decision support system to support decision-makers in making informed decisions.

In collaboration with the Department of Forests and Soil Conservation, ICIMOD has been developing a ‘Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring System’ in Nepal. The system has been augmented with several additional features, and the user interface has been localised in Nepali language.
