The Hydropower Transboundary Working Group under the Koshi Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Hub (KDKH) is organising this webinar to present and discuss the guidance on the application of dam safety requirements under the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework. The World Bank’s Good practice note on dam safety is accompanied by seven technical notes that provide detailed explanation and guidance, including one on seismic risk.
The Hydropower Transboundary Working Group is a cross-cutting working group of the KDKH. It is hosted by National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Nepal; Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA), India; and the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE), China. It is led by the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, and run with secretariat support from ICIMOD.
The group focuses on assessing multi-hazard vulnerability and risk in hydropower; identifying potential ways of enhancing the resilience of hydropower to a changing climate; enhancing collaboration in terms of research, publishing, and advocacy; and strengthening dissemination to promote the concept of resilient hydropower. The group has members from China, India, and Nepal and works closely with other transboundary working groups under the KDKH. The group also organises webinars, capacity-building programmes, and knowledge co-creation and sharing activities on a regular basis.
The KDKH is a platform led and driven by its members to foster transboundary collaboration on disaster risk reduction and explore the interlinkages between science, policy, and practice. Its vision is to contribute to a resilient Koshi Basin through better understanding and evidence-based decision making on transboundary water-related disaster risk reduction.
Satoru Ueda is the Lead Dam Specialist at the World Bank, serving as its corporate focal point of dam safety. He has 35 years of global experience in planning, design, and safety review of large dams as well as water resource development and management. Since joining the World Bank in 1998, Ueda has contributed to more than 200 operations in water resources, irrigation, hydropower, and flood management, including more than 100 dam-related projects in over 60 countries. He has played a key role in the development and implementation of the World Bank’s dam safety-related policies and knowledge products, including the Good practice note on dam safety under the Environmental and Social Framework and ‘Laying the foundations: A global analysis of regulatory frameworks for the safety of dams and downstream communities’. Ueda holds master’s degrees from the University of Tokyo and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
