It is a day to celebrate water and to express solidarity with efforts that make a difference to members of the global population who suffer from water-related issues. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of water. Environmental damage, together with climate change, is driving the water-related crises we see around the world. Floods, drought and water pollution are all made worse by degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water.

This year’s theme for World Water Day is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century. Globally, the vast majority of all the wastewater from our homes, cities, industries, and agriculture flows back to nature without being treated or reused.Water is at the core of sustainable development. Water resources and the range of services they provide underpin poverty reduction, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. From food and energy security to human and environmental health, water contributes to improvements in social well-being and inclusive growth, affecting the livelihoods of billions.
