ICIMOD Celebrates the World Environment Day 2017

International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) celebrated the World Environment Day (WED) by organizing various activities at its Knowledge Park in Godavari, Nepal, and venues in regional member countries Afghanistan and Bhutan.

Godavari Park Cleaning Campaign

ICIMOD organized a Godavari Bus Park cleaning campaign (https://www.icimod.org/?q=27613). Over 200 students and teachers from seven schools in the Godavari area participated in the campaign. The campaign was a joint initiative of ICIMOD Eco Club and the St Xavier’s Godavari School Eco Club. The participating schools were Shanti Rani School, Vidya Sagar Boarding School, Crescent Academy, Dolphin English Secondary School, Shree Siddheswar Adharbhut Vidhyalaya, and Kitini Higher Secondary School.

Cycle Rally

The ICIMOD Eco Club also organized a cycle rally from the ICIMOD headquarters in Khumaltar to the ICIMOD Knowledge Park in Godavari. The cyclists later participated in a tree plantation programme at the Naudhara Community Forest in Godavari. Other participants included representatives from the Lalitpur District Forest Office, Office Bearers of the Naudhara Community Forest User Group, Ilaka Forest Office, Godavari, and ICIMOD staff members. One hundred Himalayan yew saplings were planted at the site.

Launch of ICT for Mountain Development Award

To mark World Environment Day 2017, ICIMOD is pleased to launch the ICT for Mountain Development Award 2017 for the fourth consecutive year. The award recognizes innovations, and the use and application of Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICTD) to promote mountain development and environmental conservation. Godavari Landscape Journey

The Godavari landscape Journey marked the celebration of World Environment Day 2017 with the global theme “Connecting with Nature”. The Landscape journey was a process of strengthening the connections between nature and human beings. It drew multiple stakeholders and engaged multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral teams to strengthen connections between natural and socio-cultural elements in the landscape so as to develop integrated and holistic solutions.

An array of events at the national and regional levels were organized in several countries in the HKH to celebrate this day.

In Afghanistan, the ICIMOD Country Office in Kabul organized a seminar in collaboration with national and international partners based in Kabul, including the National Environment Protection Agency (NEPA).

In Bhutan, the Bhutan Media & Communications Institute (BMCI) organized a field trip for school students to the Botanical Park in Sarbithang in Thimphu. The objective was to educate students about the importance of nature conservation and connection with human beings and to show how nature has positive impact on a child’s social, psychological, academic and physical health. The activities carried out during the field trip included drawing and colouring, and identifying different types of plants, among others.

In Nepal, ICIMOD and Small Earth Nepal (SEN) organized one-day workshop on Nature Photography’ at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park in Godavari Workshop on Nature Photography. Selected photos of the nature photography workshop were exhibited at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park complex where the Knowledge Park stakeholder’s consultation was organized. David Molden, Director General, ICIMOD; KP Acharya, Director General, Forest Department, Government of Nepal; and Gajendra Maharjan, Mayor, Godavari Municipality handed over the prize to the three best nature photographers.
