Twenty eight highly motivated journalists from eight countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region —Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan — attended the ‘Regional Media Training Workshop: Air pollution, its sources and impacts, and mitigation options’ organised by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu 16-20 November 2015.
Representing print, radio, television, and internet media outlets, participants were selected through a competitive process. The basis for selection included submitting three sample stories on air pollution and other atmospheric issues that they had written in the past and a cover letter describing their area of interest within the field of atmospheric science and motivation to attend the workshop. Judges from within ICIMOD carefully weighed the applications and selected the participants through consensus.
During the opening session of the training workshop ICIMOD’s Regional Programme Manager for River Basins, Dr Arun Bhakta Shrestha, encouraged journalists to write about air pollution and atmospheric issues.
‘This is the first media training workshop being organised by ICIMOD to enhance the understanding of journalists about the sources of air pollution, atmospheric processes, impacts, mitigation options, and policy options’, Shrestha said.
The five-day long workshop comprised presentations by scientists and specialists, field trips and lively discussions guided by two facilitators, Kunda Dixit, Editor of Nepali Times and Ramyata Limbu, Head of Panos South Asia. By the end of the workshop, the participants shared their story ideas and exchanged views with fellow journalists, facilitators, and scientists.
