The first webinar of this series focuses on Nepal. The participants will hear from government officials, international and local development organizations, practitioners, local research organizations, and women farmers/farmers groups about ongoing efforts, key issues, opportunities, and constraints in facilitating women’s access to agricultural mechanization.

Pema Gyamtsho is the Director General at ICIMOD. Gyamtsho, who is from the Hindu Kush Himalayan region himself, has been minister, opposition leader, and Member of Parliament of Bhutan. In these roles, he has played important roles in contributing to the nation’s ambitious climate goals. He developed Bhutan’s plan to become the world’s first fully organic nation as Minister of Agriculture and Forest in 2012. His experience spans public financing for environmental sustainability; enactment of legislation – focusing on environmental stewardship, conservation, and climate change mitigation; and strategic programmatic visioning, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Yogendra Kumar Karki is the Secretary for Agriculture Development at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD), Nepal. He is an economic growth and agri-trade expert with experience in agriculture extension, technology transfer, and good governance.
Sumitra Manandhar Gurung is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mahila Sahayatra Microfinance Bittiya Sanstha Ltd (SAHAYATRA). She has worked in the fields of integrated rural and urban development, micro-credit, natural resource management, and community participation and social inclusion.
Shree Ram Ghimire is a Joint Secretary and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD), Nepal. He is a multilateral and bilateral agri-trade expert and a professional trainer in agricultural trade, quarantine regulation, agriculture economics, and farm management.
Rashmi Kharel Karmacharya is a Gender Focal Person at the Center for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED). She focuses on enhancing social inclusion and gender equity to address women’s issues in CEAPRED-led projects.
Dipak Gyawali is a hydroelectric power engineer and political economist, currently affiliated with the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as an Academician. He is a former Minister of Water Resources of Nepal. He has worked on promoting farmer-managed irrigation systems and bringing early community-centric reforms to the electricity and irrigation sectors. His works on water and energy resources, environment, and development have been widely published.
Takayuki Hagiwara is the Regional Programme Lead at the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. He has been working as a natural resource management specialist for over 25 years. He has published a farmer field school implementation guide based on his practical experiences in the field. He was the lead technical officer on the Sustainable Livelihood Development Project in Kenya’s Mau Forest Complex, which received FAO’s Edouard Saouma Award in 2013.
