Adhikari, Bhim
Bhim Adhikari is a Senior Program Specialist at Canada’s International Development Research Center (IDRC) and works specifically on the environmental economics program. His main research interest is in environment and development, particularly poverty-environment nexus, climate change adaptation, ecosystem services and institutions and environmental resource management. Over the past twenty years, Bhim has worked with a number of organizations and academic institutions, including the Institute for Water, Environment and Health- the United Nations University’s think tank on water. At the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Pakistan, he tackled issues around environmental fiscal reforms and mainstreaming environment into poverty reduction strategies. He worked with a rural energy project at the United Nation’s Development Program in Nepal, focusing on energy-environment issues. Bhim has worked at the University of Michigan, USA as a Research Fellow and was an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of York, UK. He also worked as consultant and visiting researcher for the Asian Development Bank Institute, Tokyo, Japan; UNDP, New York; and TERI University in India. Bhim holds a PhD in Environmental Economics and Management from the University of York and has produced several publications on economic aspects of environment and natural resource management.

Chopra, Kanchan
Kanchan Chopra, elected recently as Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for Developing countries, is a leading expert in issues of environment and development in India. Dr. Chopra received her Ph.D. degree from the Delhi School of Economics. She has numerous publications and has authored and co-authored several books, the latest being “Biodiversity, Land-use change and Human well-being.” In 2009, she also eco-edited the “Handbook of Environmental Economics in India”, published by Oxford University Press. Till May 2009, Kanchan Chopra was Director and Professor, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. She is currently on the Editorial and Policy Boards of several international journals including Environment and Development Economics and Ecological Economics. She has been a Member of the Assessment Panel of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, an assessment supported internationally by UNEP, World Bank and other international bodies from 2001-2005 and Member, Advisory and Management Committee, the South Asian Network on Development and Environmental Economics. Professor Kanchan Chopra is currently President of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics.

Das, Saudamini
Saudamini Das is an associate professor of economics at the Swami Shradhanand College of University of Delhi teaching both post graduate and under graduate students and currently working as associate professor in ‘Environment and Development’ under the Think Tank Initiative of IDRC, Canada at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. Dr Das worked as a visiting Mälar scholar at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm. Her research areas are valuation of ecosystem services, coastal vulnerability, adaptation to climatic extreme events (storms and heat waves) and evaluation of public policy. Saudamini Das’ research on storm protection services of mangroves has received wide acclaim and she has been invited to present her work at more than 40 different workshops/conferences, including World Bank (Washington DC), FAO, UNDP, IUCN, LOICZ workshops, EAERE conferences, disaster management workshops organized by Government of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand etc. Forestry Division of FAO has circulated her SANDEE working paper as one of the best research on protection services of coastal vegetation, the American Museum of Natural History has produced a short movie on her paper (coauthored with Jeff Vincent) published in PNAS and Nature Conservancy scientists rate her work as some of the strongest evidence to date showing that “protecting mangroves not only saves lives but also saves money”. Dasgupta, Sir Partha
Sir Partha Dasgupta is Frank Ramsey Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge, Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge, and Professorial Research Fellow at the Sustainable Consumption Institute, University of Manchester. He has also taught at the London School of Economics and Stanford University. Among many important appointments he has the honor of being the first economist to be elected as a fellow of the Royal Society. In 2007, Partha Dasgupta received the John Kenneth Galbraith Award from the American Agricultural Economics Association. Prof. Dasgupta is a founder member of SANDEE and also a past chair of SANDEE’s Management and Advisory Committee.

Duggar, Manik
Manik Duggar is working as the Senior Policy Advisor with the Northern Projects Management Office (NPMO), Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) Government of Canada. He provides policy advise related to regulatory reform related to EA and regulatory review of large and major resource development projects in Canada’s three northern territories. He also handles NPMO’s efforts on attracting foreign direct investments (FDI) for resource development in Canada’s North. Prior to this assignment, Manik worked as Senior Project Manager with CanNor/NPMO, Acting Executive Director and Senior Policy Advisor with the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board, Senior Associate with DPRA Canada and Program Manager of SANDEE. Manik also teaches the undergraduate course in micro- and macro-economics at the Aurora College in Yellowknife.
Manik has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, a Master’s degreein Business and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies. Manik lives in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada.

Emerton, Lucy
Lucy Emerton has degrees in social anthropology and development economics. She has been working as an environmental economist for the last 20 years across 58 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australasia and Latin America. Her work focuses particularly on the valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, innovative environmental financing mechanisms, and the economics of watershed management. She has published extensively on these topics. Between 1990 and 2001 Lucy was based in Africa, where she worked as an environmental economics technical advisor for DFID and for a variety of other bilateral, NGO, UN and private sector organisations. Between 1998 and 2008, she established and led environmental economics programmes for IUCN (the International Union for the Conservation of Nature) in East Africa, Asia and at the Global level. Based in Asia since 2001, Lucy is currently Chief Economist at the Environment Management Group, an association of experts providing technical support, business planning advice and research & development services in environmental sustainability to the corporate sector, governments and international agencies.

Ghate, Rucha
Rucha Ghate is one of the founding members of SHODH: The Institute for Research and Development, based in Nagpur, India. She is also the Director of Collaborative Research Center of the International Forestry Resources and Institution, Bloomington, Indiana. She was earlier a Reader in Economics at Nagpur University and a Visiting Fellow at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. She has taught at the Asian Institute of Technology and Mekong Institute Foundation, Thailand, and a course on ‘environment and development’ to visiting students from William and Mary collage, Virginia University, USA. She is the author of two book Uncommons in the Commons and Forest Policies & Tribal Development, and her papers have been published in journals like International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Ecology, Forest, Trees and Livelihoods, Asia – Pacific journal of rural development, and Economic and Political Weekly. Ghosh, Santadas
Santadas Ghosh is an Associate Professor in Economics in Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan (a Central University in India). He teaches Environmental Economics and Research Methodology courses at post graduate level. He is also a post graduate degree holder in computer application (MCA) and teaches Computer Application in Economics in his Department. He is associated with SANDEE since 2004, initially as a researcher and later as a resource person. His area of expertise is in sample selection and questionnaire designing in primary surveys. He worked extensively in remote islands in the Sundarban delta in India. His work contributed to several book chapters in edited volumes on environment and development published by Oxford University Press or Cambridge University Press, including one in Environmental Valuation in South Asia (CUP) which incorporated selected SANDEE studies. His interest is to explore remote rural areas through household surveys pertaining to issues related to Environment and Development. His micro level survey-based research has also been funded by policy making agencies like Ministry of Agriculture (GoI) and NABARD(National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development, India). He is also a Senior Asian Fellow of Asian Centre for Development (ACD, Bangladesh).

Haider, Mohammed Ziaul
Mohammed Ziaul Haider is a Professor of Economics at Khulna University, Bangladesh. He teaches courses on environmental economics and industrial economics at undergraduate and graduate level classes. Professor Haider has supervised more than 50 undergraduate and graduate students in their thesis/research works until 2013. He has conducted/organized several workshops on research methodology and econometrics for university students and faculty members. Dr. Haider received his Ph.D in Economics from Tohoku University, Japan. Currently he is serving as the Dean of Social Science School and Head of Economics Discipline at Khulna University, Bangladesh. He is also serving as the member of the Khulna University Syndicate and Academic Council since March 2013. He has published more than twenty peer-reviewed articles in renowned international journals including ‘Journal of Environmental Management’ and ‘Journal of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition’. Moreover, he is serving as the editorial board member of three international journals. Professor Haider has several years working experience as a consultant/project director in research projects funded/managed by various international organizations, such as ADB, IFC, SANDEE, GTZ, SDC, and domestic organizations including Planning Commission of Bangladesh government, and Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). Hauqe, A.K. Enamul
A.K. Enamul Hauqe is a Professor of Economics at the United International University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has been teaching environmental and resource economics since 1992. Dr Haque completed his PhD degree from the University of Guelph Canada in 1991 in the field of Environmental and Resource Economics. Besides teaching, Dr Haque has contributed to several high level committees in the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Bangladesh. His research fields include soil erosion, impact of agricultural land degradation and health costs and institutions related to drinking water contamination from arsenic. He has also been a consultant to the World Bank, Dhaka, GTZ, Dhaka, IUCN Bangladesh and is a member of the SANDEE management and advisory committee. He is now advising the Government of Bangladesh as a member of its Technical Committee on mitigation due to climate change. He is a life member of Bangladesh Economic Association.

Jodha, Narpat S.
Narpat S. Jodha had his post school education at University of Rajasthan (Jaipur), Delhi School of Economics ( Delhi University- for MA in Economics) and Jodhpur University ( Rajasthan- for Ph.D. in agriculture and resource economics). Dr. Jodha has worked in over fifteen countries of Asia and Africa as employee of different CGIAR Centers as well as the other agencies like the World Bank, FAO, and UNEP besides ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development – covering 8 Himalayan countries), where he has worked for nearly two decades. Based on field level research and advisory work, he has published nearly a dozen books and over 90 research cum advisory papers, some of which have been re-printed in Books of Readings by different publishers. Focusing mainly on micro level approaches Jodha has extensively worked on subjects like dry land agriculture, farmers’ adaptations to weather induced risks and vulnerabilities, traditional and modern farm technologies, community group actions and common property resources etc. in dry tropical areas as well as the mountain regions.

Kadekodi, Gopal
Gopal Kadekodi, is an honorary Professor in Centre for Multi-disciplinary Development Research (CMDR), Dharwad, Karnataka where he served as a research Professor from 1982 – 2002. Prof. Kadekodi served as the Director of Institute of Economics Change, Bangalore for four years. Prof. Kadekodi received his PhD in Economics from University of Southern California, USA. His doctor’s degree bagged the Thomas Nixon Carver award in 1973 as the best thesis in USA in 1973. Prof. Kadekodi, a full bright scholar has been awarded the “Rajyaotsava Award’, for his contribution in the field of Education and Environmental Research. His work has been mostly in the area of Common Property Resources, Energy, Natural Resource Management and Valuation, Economic Development and Governance. He has published more than 15 books and many more peer-reviewed publications. Recently he was actively involved in Edition and writing the Karnataka Development Report. He has served in the editorial boards of Environment and Resource Economics, The Pacific and Asian Journal of Energy, and Journal of Quantitative Economics. He also served as an INSEE chair.

Kanel, Keshav Raj
Keshav Raj Kanel has worked in the forestry sector for more than 30 years. He was instrumental in designing and implementing community forestry program in Nepal. He has worked as the Chief of Community Forestry Division, then as the Director General of the Department of Forests of the Government of Nepal. Later, he became the Secretary of the Ministry of Land Reform and Management. He retired from the Government of Nepal in 2009, and is now working as a Resource Economist and Policy Analyst on themes ranging from Climate Change to public financing and fiduciary risk assessment in forestry programs.He was a Visiting Professor of the Forestry Institute in Nepal in early 80s. He has also a wide experience in working for the World Bank, DFID, USAID, RECOFT and a number of International Consulting firms. His academic qualifications include Masters in Forestry from Duke University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Presently, he is a SANDEE (South Asia Network for Development and Environment Economics) Fellow, and lives in Nepal.

Khan, Nasser Ali
Nasser Ali Khan is a member (operations and planning) of the Higher Education Commission in Islambad, Pakistan and a Professor of Economics at the University of Peshawar. Previously, for several years, he was the Director of the Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar. He has taught at various institutions and been instrumental in coordinating international courses in the country. He has participated in government service as a member of different committees and organizations and has a long history of contributing to the development of higher education in Pakistan. He is a also a founder member of SANDEE.

Kumar, K.S.Kavi
K.S.Kavi Kumar received a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and a Ph.D. in development economics from Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai. He worked at The Energy and Resource Institute, Delhi and Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi before joining Madras School of Economics (MSE) in 2000, where he is currently working as a professor. His main research interest is in environmental economics with particular focus on the economics of global climate change. Since July 2007 he has been coordinating the activities of the Centre of Excellence in Environmental Economics at MSE supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. He has been associated with SANDEE since 2006.

Maler, Karl Goran
Karl-Göran Mäler is the former Director of the Beijer International institute of Ecological Economics and Professor of Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science in 1981. In 2005 he shared the European Lifetime Achievement Award in Environmental Economics with David Pearce. Partha Dasgupta and Karl Goran Maler shared the Volvo Environment Prize in 2002 and the Kenneth Boulding award from the International Society of Ecological Economics (ISEE) in 2004. Prof Mäler is a founder member of SANDEE.

Mishra, Arabinda
Arabinda Mishra is presently working as Senior Social Scientist at ICIMOD, Nepal. Before joining ICIMOD, he was Dean of the Faculty of Policy and Planning, TERI University (since 2005) and had the concurrent responsibility of Director, Earth Science and Climate Change Division in TERI (2008-2013). Arabinda led TERI’s engagement with the Government of India and a number of State governments in the preparation of action plans on climate change. Prior to joining TERI University, he was a Fellow at the Centre for Multi-disciplinary Development Research (CMDR) in Karnataka, an institution affiliated to the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). Arabinda holds a Master of Analytical and Applied Economics from Utkal University, Orissa and a PhD from Sambalpur University, Orissa. Specializing in resource and environmental economics, Arabinda has a strong element of inter-disciplinarity to his research, which covers both the natural and social sciences including climate change risks and community-level vulnerability assessment, the management of ecosystems and their services for poverty alleviation, institutions and governance in environmental management, and natural resource accounting. Arabinda has a number of publications to his credit and is in the editorial board of a couple of international journals; a number of PhD students have successfully completed their doctoral research under his guidance.

Mukhopadhyay, Pranab
Pranab Mukhopadhyay is Associate Professor and Head of the Economics Department at Goa University, India. He worked as an Environmental Economist with the South Asian Network for Development & Environmental Economics, Kathmandu in 2006-2008 and continues to be associated with its activities. He has published in the PNAS, Environment and Development Economics & Economic and Political Weekly and numerous edited volumes. He is the co-editor of Promise, Trust and Evolution: Managing the Commons of South Asia (OUP, Oxford) and co-author of Common Property Water Resources: Dependence and Institutions in India’s villages (TERI, New Delhi). His work in environmental economics concentrates on Common Property Resources and institutional economics.

Murty, M.N.
M.N. Murty specializes in Public Economics and Environmental & Resource Economics. He has been a visiting scholar at numerous institutions like the Institute of Developing Economies, Tokyo, University of Birmingham, UK, and the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi. He currently is a Consultant with the Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi, where he was a Professor till his recent retirement. He has earlier been a Consultant to agencies like the World Bank, International Crop Research Institute (ICRISAT), ESCAP, Bangkok, and The Energy Research Institute (TERI), Delhi. Pant, Krishna Pd.
Dr. Pant is teaching Environmental Economics in Kathmandu University and Economics in Tribhuvan University in Nepal. Earlier he worked with Government of Nepal for agricultural planning and policy analysis as a Senior Agricultural Economist; managing competitive grants system as a Senior Programme Officer; and agricultural market research as a Joint Secretary. He continues to provide expert services to various organizations like International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Biodiversity International, South Asia Network of Economic Research Institutes (SANEI), South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE), Dan Church Aid (DCA) South Asia, HELVETAS, Nepal, and Center for Economic Development and Administration (CEDA), Tribhuvan University. Pattanayak, Subhrendu
Prof. Pattanayak studies how human behaviors relate to the environment by collaborating with ecologists, epidemiologists, statisticians and other social scientists. Towards this end, he attempts to build models to analyze the causes and consequences of human behaviors, and use estimated parameters in integrated simulation tools to help design behavioral interventions (policies). His research has been in two domains: (a) evaluation of ecosystem services (primarily from forests), and (b) economics of environmental health. In both cases, he has focused on socially marginal populations, and examined policies that are motivated by enormous inequities and a range of efficiency concerns – externalities, public goods and imperfect information. In order to fund, design, implement, and disseminate results from this research, he has collaborated closely with policy-makers in multi-lateral, national, state, and local governments, as well as NGOs, academics, and local research organizations in India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the U.S. He is also a Fellow and faculty member of the South Asian Network of Development and Environmental Economists…. read more

Roy, Joyashree
Joyashree Roy is Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at Jadavpur University. She leads several major collaborative research programs in the university including The Global Change Programme and the Nippon Foundation endowed long term SYLFF Project with a research focus on “Tradition, Social Change and Sustainable Development: A Holistic Approach”. Joyashree previously spent time at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California at the Environmental Technology and Energy Division as a Ford Foundation Post Doctoral Fellow on Environmental Economics. She was also involved in the preparation of the AR4 Report for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winning Inter Governmental Panel for climate Change. Prof. Roy has authored one book “Demand for Energy in Indian Industries (A Quantitative Approach),” and jointly edited several books including ‘Environmental Economics in India- Concepts and Problems’. She has written over forty articles in peer reviewed professional journals and books. Her current research interests are modeling energy demand, climate change, environmental valuation, natural resource accounting, water quality and health and economy wide modeling. Sankar, U.
U. Sankar received a Ph.D in economics from University of Wisconsin in 1967. He served on the faculties of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Madras and Madras School of Economics. His research interests have been in applied econometrics, pricing of public utilities, cost benefit analysis of India’s space programme and environmental economics. Sattar, Nikhat
Nikhat Sattar is a development professional with over 25 years of experience in management, in national and international organizations. She has spent several years in planning, development and implementation of organizational and thematic plans and is well versed with development issues in Asia in general and Pakistan and Nepal in particular. She has also had years of experience in the private sector, in corporate planning and management. After graduating from the N.E.D University of Engineering and Technology in 1980, Nikhat spent the first 13 years of her professional life with Zelin ( Pvt. ) Ltd, an engineering company in Karachi. She left Zelin while holding the post of Senior Manager, Corporate Planning, in which she was responsible for business plans, marketing, communications, financial analysis, management information systems and HR management. She then joined IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ), Pakistan Country Office as advisor to the Country Representative. She spent another 13 years at IUCN in various positions, the last one being Country Group Head (Nepal, Pakistan Bhutan, Afghanistan). Nikhat left IUCN in March 2009 and has since then been associated with various development agencies as an advisor. Nikhat was involved with SANDEE during the period of 2006-2008, when SANDEE was located within IUCN in Nepal.

Siddiqui, Rehana
Rehana Siddiqui is Dean, Research, at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, Islamabad, Pakistan. She has completed PhD in Economics from Columbia University, New York, USA. She teaches courses in Microeconomic Theory, Environmental Economics and Applied Econometrics. She has published on various issues including economic growth, energy, exchange rate and gender issues.

Somanathan, E.
E. Somanathan received a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard in 1995 and taught at Emory University and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor before joining the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi, where he is Professor. His main research interest is in development economics, particularly environmental problems and political economy. In 2002 he received a Sandee grant to study awareness and the demand for environmental quality in connection with drinking water. He became a Sandee resource person in 2004. He is writing a book on environmental problems in India.

Sterner, Thomas
Thomas Sterner is professor of environmental economics in Gothenburg, Sweden where he has built up the Unit for Environmental Economics with a staff of about a dozen PhDs and 25 graduate students. This is one of the more important European centres for environmental economics and gives a unique PhD program in environmental economics with a large participation of graduate students from developing countries, a master program and a large volume of research. Sterner has published some 50 articles in refereed journals, and 10 books, the main focus of which is on environmental policy instruments with applications to energy and climate, industry, transport economics and resource management in developing countries. Vincent, Jeffrey
Jeffrey Vincent is the Clarence F. Korstian Professor of Forest Economics and Management in the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University. Vincent‘s research focuses on the economics of natural resource management and policy in developing countries. Currently, his two main projects are a 5-year project with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia on biodiversity conservation in tropical landscapes affected by commercial logging, and an ongoing project on the joint impacts of brown clouds and greenhouse gases on climate change, water, and agriculture in South Asia. He has also worked extensively on the adjustment of national income and wealth accounts for resource depletion.

Vincent’s books include the Handbook of Environmental Economics (North-Holland, three volumes, 2003, 2005) and Managing Natural Wealth: Environment and Development in Malaysia (RFF Press, 2005). His articles have appeared in environmental economics journals, including the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Land Economics, and Environmental and Resource Economics; economic development journals, including the World Bank Economic Review, Economic Development and Cultural Change, and World Development; forestry journals, including Forest Science and the Journal of Forestry; and general science journals, such as Science. He received the Cozzarelli Prize for the best article in applied biological, agricultural, and environmental sciences published in the Proceedings of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2006 and the McKinsey Award for the most significant article published in the Harvard Business Review in 2003.

Vincent serves on the board of the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics in Stockholm, Sweden, and the international advisory committees of the South Asian Network of Development and Environmental Economists (SANDEE) and the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA). He is on the editorial boards of Environment and Development Economics and the Journal of Tropical Forest Science. He consults regularly for the World Bank and other international organizations. He has directed or worked on projects in Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Prior to joining Duke in July 2007, he held positions in the Graduate School of International Relations & Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego (2001-7); the Institute for International Development at Harvard University (1990-2001); and the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University (1987-90). He has degrees from Yale University (Ph.D., 1988), Michigan State University (M.S., 1984), and Harvard University (A.B., 1981).
