Policies regarding SANDEE grante decision

SANDEE supports research in the area of environment and development economics. SANDEE funded research is generally undertaken by individuals or teams from different institutions in South Asia. SANDEE facilitates this research by providing monetary and technical support during the research period through its advisors and the Secretariat. Researchers submit their grant proposals through the following processes:

Researchers send a concept note in response to an advertisement and are invited to send a full proposal based on an initial screening; or researchers are requested, under certain circumstances (for certain types of grants), to submit a research proposal:

Proposals are reviewed and discussed in the Secretariat and, generally, sent out for peer review and peer reviewer comments sent to researchers;
Based on Secretariat and peer review comments and the quality of the revised proposal, researchers are invited to a Research and Training (R and T) workshop. Occasionally, either because of the urgency of an issue or because an advisor has reviewed a proposal, a researcher may be invited without full peer review comments;
SANDEE may also invite researchers to join together as a team and submit a set of proposals that are jointly reviewed;
Occasionally, SANDEE may provide an outside grant in the form of a consulting contract to a researcher to undertake a research related task.

Final grant decisions are based on the following processes:
At the R and T workshop, researchers present their research proposals and discuss them with advisors;
A final recommendation on the research grant is made by the advisors at an advisory committee meeting;
The final decision on funding a research project remains that of the SANDEE Secretariat and is based on availability of funds, scrutiny of the SANDEE portfolio and the relative merits of the project for capacity building or policy related work;
Research proposals from colleagues, current students or family members of the Secretariat team and/or advisors will not be considered. If there are exceptional circumstances, the Director will bring such a concept note or proposal to the attention of the advisors and a vote will be taken on whether it should be considered.

Questionnaires for reference

These are a set of Model questionnaires that can be used with modification by researchers for their work. This questionnaire prototype has been developed by Shubhayu Saha of North Carolina State University for SANDEE. It is primarily intended for researchers involved in studying rural livelihoods. The questionnaires are intended to serve as templates that can be modified to address more context-specific questions.
